Yasmine Khan
July 4, 1966 – May 5th, 2026
Yasmine passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026 after a battle with cancer, which she faced with poise and determination. Born on July 4, 1966, in Montreal, Yas brought light and joy to all who knew her throughout her remarkable life.
Yas is lovingly remembered by her husband of 31 years, Peter Askew and loving mother to Sarah and William. She is survived by her mother, Dianne Khan, sister Amber and niece Taylor (Ethan, Emelia). Her cousins were like sisters to her – Nissa, Jenni, Tina, (Luke, Sacha, Sabine), and Wendy (Phil, Jaden, Oliver, Simon). Yas spent many summers on L’Île Cadieux with her beloved Aunt Susie. Yas was predeceased by her father Zafar, Uncle Nadeem; Auntie Bev and her Uncle Jawaid (J.K.) who was so special to her throughout her life. Henry, our Wheaton Terrier, was her constant companion for 15 years.
Yas and Pete met as teenagers at Lorne Park Secondary School, married at age 29 and built a life together in Oakville. Yasmine was completely focused on raising her family, with Sarah, Will and Pete the centre of her life. A large circle of friends extended her world; from LP high school, Oakville, Beaver Valley Ski Club, The Oakville Club, various book clubs and the tightknit group from Oriole Drive when the kids were young. Yas was the consummate hostess, friend and supporter, always ready to pick up the phone or meet for wine to chat and catch up. Yas and her close friends never ran out of material. She had no interest in cooking but had a great partner for that, was the best dinner companion Pete could ask for and was superb at supervision and clean-up.
She was incredibly proud of Will and Sarah; their education, their adventures and many life accomplishments – that came through so warm and proud and illuminated her every moment. She has been a tremendous supporter of Peter throughout his career, looking after family and always ready to travel, making great friends around the world.
Yasmine was genuinely interested in others, their families, their kids lives and how they were growing in life. She liked nothing more to learn about them and engage with them because she really cared about their interests, their challenges and their progress. She was fiercely loyal, and she made the people in her life feel seen and valued.
Yas had a passion for many sports, enjoying tennis with the TOWLs, pickleball, badminton with the “besties”, skiing at BV and on family vacations, bridge, and more recently mah-jong which she was playing only days before she passed. Whether on the court or enjoying meals and wine with friends, Yas’s curiosity and lively conversation made every gathering memorable.
She faced her cancer diagnosis with characteristic strength and determination. Her eternal optimism shined through, and she dealt with the pain, the medical chaos and the personal indignity that cancer brings with it. She taught her medical team that treatments needed to co-exist with her travel plans because nothing was going to interrupt where she wanted to travel with family and friends. She delivered a masterclass in positive attitude that inspired us all.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the medical team at Juravinski Cancer Centre for their exceptional care during Yas’s treatment. Special thanks to Dr. Sebastien Hotte and her favourite chemo nurse Olivia Leong for their compassion and dedication. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Bobby Shayegan, Dr. Aleida ter Kuile and Dr. Sandy Sharma for their support and attentive care through her journey.
Donations can be made in Yas’ memory to Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation – Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre where she received such great care and attention.
Visitation will take place at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home Monday May 11, 2026 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. A private family service will take place at a later date.
