Obituary

Wilhelmus (Bill) Nicolaas Stassen, 82, called to be with Jesus on Wednesday, August 12, 2015, at his home in Oakville, ON. Born to Bastiaan and Elizabeth (Blinde) in Soengei Gerong, (Palembang) Indonesia. During WWII, at the age of 12, Bill was interned in a Japanese concentration camp for boys. He immigrated to Canada with parents and siblings in 1953-54. Bill was married for the past 20 years to Agnes Margaret (Suderman) Unger. He was predeceased by his first wife Phyllis Joan (Clark) and baby Rose. Bill loved his children Mary-Ellen (Steve), Joanne, and Phil Unger (Val) and his grandchildren, Nicholaas (Patrycja), Keegan (Lynda), Gabrielle, Liam and great-grandchildren Madyson, McKenzie, Caleb, Mylie and Brooklyn. An architect by profession, a painter and poet at heart, he loved swans, hiking, sajur kari, ginger cookies, natural light falling through a window, candlelit dinners and the occasional Lindsay Lohan movie. No family road trip was complete without a lecture on history, language or the virtues of a well-designed public space. Bill taught us to value beauty and loyalty. His love for the Lord was reflected in everything he did, including his decision to be baptized in 1990. He saw life's hard times as a chance to learn and grow. Our sadness is that we will not create any more new memories, but our joy is the many memories we do cherish. Private burial. Memorial service at Chartwell Baptist Church, 228 Chartwell Rd, Oakville, 11:00 am, Aug 22, 2015. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating: www.kerrstreet.net.
