Obituary
Dad died peacefully, at the age of 80.
Left to mourn him are his daughters Debi (John) and Yvonne (Les); stepdaughters Keren (Ryan) and Sharon (Karol); grandchildren Melissa (Derek), Kevin (Jenelle), Nicole (Alyssa), and little Parker; and even-littler great-grandson Lincoln, whose birth brought such joy to Dad this spring. Dad's brother Eric and sister-in-law Jai (David) are now the last of his generation, and there are many nieces and nephews (and their children) now bereft of their Uncle Doug. Many friends feel his absence, especially the gang from Tipperton.
Predeceased by his parents Ernest and Margaret, and siblings George, Margaret, and David.
Dad was proud of his career at CKF and maintained close friendships with many of his coworkers long after his retirement in 2006. Dad enjoyed his retirement doing 'nothing' – daily walks, travelling to Europe, China, the Galapagos and Machu Picchu. Those exotic travels were great, but he said his favourite was the annual trip to Florida for the Blue Jays' Spring Training. The last two and a half years were challenging for him in many ways, but Dad met those challenges head on, and did his best to stay positive. Cheering on his teams the Blue Jays, Leafs and Raptors helped him greatly … even when they let him down.
We would like to thank the wonderful people at Palermo Village Retirement Home - you kept Dad safe during COVID - we will always be grateful for that. The kindness and positive attitudes of everyone at Palermo were a breath of fresh air that we all appreciated, and Dad truly enjoyed his time there.
We also wish to thank all of Dad's doctors for their excellent, compassionate care. In particular, Dr. Kazem, Yolanda, and all of the nurses in the Palliative Care Unit at OTMH, we cannot thank you enough for the wonderful, thoughtful care you gave Dad, and kindness you showed to us.
Because of COVID restrictions, we will not be having a service for Dad now. We will have a Celebration of Life for him around this time next year – when all who wish to do so can make the trip. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was close to Dad's heart, and he participated in their fundraising walks many times. If desired, a donation in his name would be a lovely tribute.
