Our Opa, our Superman bid us his final farewell. These past few months were often not easy for Opa - or for those close to him, but the days that were good were a gift to us because so many family members and friends were able to tell him how much he was loved and to thank him for his guidance, influence and friendship. We were able to say thank you for being a great husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle, father-figure, business colleague, team mate and one hell of a friend! Our Wally was unique in so many ways – he was always the first to shed a tear at something that touched him, but yet he was so valiant through his pain. When asked by his grandchildren "How are you feeling Opa? His typical response – "Much better now that I see you"! – no matter how he was feeling. It would be an injustice to say that Wally died from cancer. Wally LIVED with cancer and did so with optimism, acceptance, strength and most of all, his unmatched sense of humour. No one laughed at his jokes as much as he did ; but we always looked forward to his next one.
Wally will be so missed and always loved by: Helene (Oma), his "girl" of almost 59 years & soul mate; his children Randy Sheremeta, Lorrie Clark, Karen Aikman and Mark Sheremeta; his son-in laws John Aikman and Alan Bower; his grandchildren Courtney & Madison Bower, John, Willy and Hannah Aikman, Keelyn Sheremeta; Jennifer Torres-Hernandez & family; his brother-in-law and fishing buddy of 30 years Joe Kurz, his wife Heather; his sister-in-law Rose Cardiff (Jerome); his beloved nieces and nephews including Dave (Jane) Pelletier, and those in the Sheremeta, Kurz and Hall clans.
Wally treasured his numerous friends who shared his great zest for life. These included his Ayerst colleagues, hockey buddies, fishing buddies, dim sum buddies, neighbours, his children's friends and the many wonderful and supportive friends that he and Helen met through their daily early morning coffees at Tim Horton's and McDonalds.
Our whole family owe special thanks and gratitude to our Aunt Rose. Her unwavering support to Mom and Dad was a special gift to us all. Both Rose and our amazing Mom provided compassionate around-the-clock care, making it possible for Dad to spend his final weeks and days at home. Thank you to Jerome and Rose's entire family for sharing her with us for so long. Mom greatly appreciates the wonderful care that Dr. Morris, Nurse Lisa (Momma Bear -OTMH) and the Acclaim Nurses provided , with special thanks to Kim. Thank you to everyone for your calls, many cards, home made meals & goodies and all of the visits. They meant a lot to Mom and Dad and to all of us.
It is Opa's request that no "fuss" be made. For those who wish to donate to Ian Anderson House, 430 Winston Churchill Blvd. Oakville L6J 7X2, please do so in his memory.
