With deep sorrow, Laura Gates (Aaron Brox) and Robert Gates (Janet Lo), announce the passing of our beloved mother, Susan Gates, on Sunday, November 2, 2025. She was the devoted Nana to Charlotte and Evie Brox. She is survived by her sister, Cathy Pawson (David).
Sue was predeceased by the love of her life, husband Douglas L. Gates, in 2018. A couple since they were 16 years old, a significant part of Sue's heart passed along with Doug.
Sue will be sorely missed by those who knew her. She had a glowing smile, a great sense of humour, and a big laugh that survived with her until the end. Sue poured most of her energy into her family, from raising her children, caring for pet dogs, to doting on her dearly loved granddaughters. Sue was an interior designer and artist by training who appreciated the beauty around us. She was generous to a fault, supporting a wide range of charities and causes.
Sue loved sunsets, euchre nights, and happy hours at her summer residence on Lake Simcoe, a place with deep roots in her family. She will particularly miss her lifelong friends from her youth in Toronto, and the communities at Edengrove in Beaverton and the Granary in Oakville.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful people who cared for our mom, and in particular, the outstanding caregivers from Nurse Next Door in Oakville, and the doctors, nurses, and palliative staff at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (6 Centre and 3 North).
A gathering will be held at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, on Sunday November 23. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. with reception to follow.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Oakville Hospital Foundation , the Canadian Cancer Society , or to your charity of choice.
