Obituary

STUART FRASER SMITH P.Eng

June 8 , 1927 - March 19, 2022

Passed away peacefully on Saturday March 19 th , 2022 at Churchill Place in Oakville , Ontario after a short illness. Fortunate to live a wonderful full life  with good health , a clear mind , many adventures and great friendships spanning across generations . Predeceased by his  wife , Audrey (2018) and his loving daughter, Dr. Sheila F. Smith (2020) . He will sadly be missed by his son , Stuart J Smith ( London, Ontario) and his large extended family .

Stuart was born on June 8 1927 to ( George ) Fraser and Elma Smith in the small southwestern Ontario town of Arthur. He  graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in in Chemical Engineering in 1950 . During his university training , he won a number of academic awards including  the Arbagh Prize for academic standing and the Chemical Institute of Canada Award in his final year .

Stuart and his wife , Audrey  met in Montreal in 1955 and married November 13 , 1957 . Stuart and Audrey went on to have two children , Dr Stuart J ( London) and Dr Sheila F ( Oakville ) who they adored and were devoted to, throughout their life. The four of them were "best friends." They did their best to celebrate major holidays together and at least once per year they would go away on some exciting adventure ! Although he did not have grandchildren , Stuart remained very close to his first cousins and their families. As well , he had a very close extended family including Mark and Marilyn McNevitts ( and family ) and Steve and Sue Harrigan. Everyone were always looking out for him.

Stuart's career started at Shell Canada in Sarnia ,Ontario but early he on was transferred to Head Office in Toronto where he worked for many years. One of the things he enjoyed about his job was the opportunity it afforded him to work with others as part of a problem solving team, and the opportunity to travel . He had assignments with Royal Dutch Shell ( Netherlands ) , Shell Oil ( USA ) and Shell Australia.  In the last 10 years of his career , rather than move to the new Head Office in Calgary , he decided to do consulting work . This kept him busier than ever and continued to foster his interest in travel . He did work for Shell Canada , Petro Canada , Irving Oil , Shell Oil (USA) , and VEBA ( Germany) . Even after his retirement , colleagues would call him for his opinion. Just when we thought he was all done , he was asked to lecture at the University of Toronto Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science . This was supposed to be a for a year or two but he did it up until his early 80 's moving from chalk board to overheads to PowerPoint presentations and finally "one on one "sessions with students via email .

In retirement , the desire to travel continued. In addition to the family trips , he would often come along on business trips with his son or daughter. While they worked , he would go off and explore . Before each trip , he would have learned about  the history , the culture and most importantly the food ! As a result , over the years  , he travelled throughout almost all of Europe , all of North America , South America, the Caribbean and Mexico , Hawaii , the South Pacific and Australia. Some of his favorite places were French Polynesia and Turkey . However , when all was said and done , he would acknowledge that his favorite place was Captiva Island , Florida. He and Audrey were "snowbirds " there for many years . He learned to play golf there and developed great friendships there that started over 25 years ago. He was a very sociable person , interesting and interested in others. He will be remembered for always wanting to learn new things ; his calm gentle nature and a big warm smile .

If Stuart were reading this , he would be the first to thank the close friends and extended family who were there to help him over these challenging several years . Special thanks goes out to Steve and Sue Harrigan , Mark and Marilyn McNevitts ( and family ) , Odilia daRosa , Rosemary Caetano, Paul and Sarah Smith , Barbara Naylor ( and family ) , Dr Danielle Leddy and Dr Linda Pedder . As well , it is important to thank all the doctors , nurses, PSW's , LHIN Palliative Care staff , Churchill Place Retirement Home staff and Thistlecreek Healthcare staff who cared for him at different stages of his illness over the past year. Special thanks to Dr Andrea Lee ( Hematology- Oncology ) and Dr Anthony McDowell .

A Celebration of Life ( together with a Celebration of Life for his daughter , Dr Sheila F Smith ) will be held at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club on Sunday June 5 th 1400 – 1700 hr . Stuart's funeral will be held at Arthur United Church , 101 Tucker Street , Arthur , Ontario on Tuesday June 7 th at 1100 hr ; followed by Internment at Greenfield Cemetery ( Arthur ).
