Obituary

Steve passed away peacefully at home on the morning of January 5th, in his 93rd year.  He was pre-deceased by Anne, his wife of 53 years and is survived by his son Steve, daughter-in-law Sue Ferry and grandson Tom of London, UK, and his son David of North Vancouver, BC.

Steve was born in Jaszbereny, Hungary, growing up on a vineyard producing the local Riesling.  After the Second World War and Hungary's incorporation into the Soviet-controlled Communist Bloc, Steve escaped his homeland, eventually setting in Hamilton, Ontario in 1954. He met Anne, originally from Scotland, when she was working as a nurse at Hamilton General. They married in 1963 and moved to Oakville two years later where they lived in their Third Line house for over 50 years. Sadly, Anne suffered from a number of serious health issues and Steve was her devoted caregiver during her final years. Following Anne's death in 2016, Steve moved to Amica Bronte Harbour.

Steve was a member of the Boilermakers Union, Local 128, retiring in 1992. Over the course of his three decades as a boilermaker Steve contributed to the construction and maintenance of many major industrial and power generation facilities in the area, including Procor, Dofasco, Stelco, the BP and Shell refineries and the Pickering Nuclear Power Plant. He was an extremely hard-working and talented man with an ability to build or repair almost anything with his own hands, as evidenced by the numerous renovations and additions that continued to transform their Third Line home. Steve liked to spend his time in his workshop or, in better weather, grilling on his barbeque, watering his flowers or tending an ever-expanding backyard vegetable garden that provided fresh and preserved produce for the dinner table year round.

Visitation (from 1:00 pm) and a short celebration of Steve's life (at 2:00 pm) will be held on Thursday, January 18th at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block east of Kerr Street), followed by a reception onsite. A private internment will take place the following day.

In lieu of flowers, Steve's family asks that donations be made to Trillium Health Partners , where both Steve and Anne received outstanding cardiac care over many years, or to a worthy charity of your own choosing.
