Obituary

Peacefully on March 4, 2019 at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital with his family by his side. Simon, beloved husband of Jeanette of 38 years. Loving father of Thomas (Rosemarie) and Andrew. Cherished grandpa of Ryan and Evan. Simon will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends. Born in the historical district of Transylvania, Roumania in 1930. Simon began his study of Metallurgical Engineering in Miskolc, Hungary in 1952. Having been a student political activist, he fled Hungary for Canada in November of 1956 due to concerns resulting from the Hungarian Revolution of October, 1956.   Simon completed his studies at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Engineering. Upon his graduation in 1960, he worked as a Metallurgical Engineer at Falconbridge Ltd. in Sudbury, Ontario. In 1972 Simon took a position with AMAX Metallurgical Laboratories in Golden, Colorado, eventually assuming the role of Director of the lab. In 1980 he returned to Canada, once again with Falconbridge Ltd. (Toronto) in the role of Chief Metallurgical Engineer. During his career he contributed to the registering of numerous patents pertaining to metallurgical processes, even as late as 2011. Upon his retirement, he continued to consult on a part time basis in his area of specialty until 2014, at which time he fully retired. Throughout his life he enjoyed several hobbies and activities - he could often be found in his woodworking shop designing and building numerous furniture projects or at his desk working on his computer conducting engineering consulting tasks or managing his portfolio. His pet dog Chelsea, and more recently Lola, were often at his side. In 2006, the 50 th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution, Simon received an honorary commendation for his contribution to the efforts to liberate Hungary from the Soviet Union.
