Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Lorraine Walmsley, daughter of the late Nelson and Dorothy Colburn in her 89 th year. Predeceased by her loving husband Dr. Douglas P Walmsley and son Robert, daughter-in-law Julie and brother Harold. She is survived by her loving daughter Linda Fletcher (John), cherished grandchildren Paul (Melissa), Jennifer (Brent), Mark, Scott and Richard, many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Born in Winnipeg Manitoba in 1928. Shirley worked at the Bank of Montreal in Winnipeg and in 1952, she married the love of her life, Douglas. Shirley and Doug moved to Bronte (Oakville) in 1954 where he practiced medicine until retiring in 1995.

Shirley spent most of her life helping others and her community involvement and service was recognized with numerous awards. In 1988 she was recognized by the Red Cross for giving 135 blood donations. In 2009, she received the Oakville Community Spirit award and Oakville Senior of the Year. In 2015, Shirley was honoured with the Ontario Leading Women Building Communities Award which recognizes an outstanding local Ontarian who, after the age of 65, has enriched the social, cultural or civic life of his or her community. In the same year she was given the Ontario Senior of the Year Award. Also in 2015 she was recognized by the Oakville Hospital Volunteer Association for her 61 years of volunteering which comprised more than 5,000 hours of service. In 1975, as part of her volunteering Shirley became the convenor of the Central Service Supply Room (CSSR), began volunteering at the snack bar every Tuesday and assisted with the Women's Auxiliary's annual meetings and open-house tours. In 1996, the Hospital Auxiliaries Association of Ontario (HAAO) presented Shirley with the lifetime membership pin.

She was designated as an honorary president of the OTMH Women's Auxiliary from 2001-03 in recognition of her contributions.

Shirley was a dedicated member of Walton United Church for 63 years. She was a long serving president of the UCW and served on many other church committees. She was also a choir member and soloist until Dec 2016. Shirley was a member of the IODE, President of the Centriller Home and School, President of the Halton Music Festival and a life member of the Ontario Medical Wives.

Shirley loved singing, camping, travelling the world and the Toronto Blue Jays. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

A strong and courageous woman, Shirley was known for her graciousness and positive attitude and was a blessing to all who knew her.

A special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff and volunteers of Ian Anderson House, to Dr. Gray, and Glenann Vincent.

Visitation will be at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, Oakville on Friday Feb 10 from 2 – 4 pm and 7 – 9 pm.

A celebration of the life of this extraordinary woman will be held at Walton United Church, 2489 Lakeshore Road W., Oakville on Saturday Feb 11 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Walton United Church, Ian Anderson House or Oakville Hospital.
