Obituary

It is hard to sum up my grandmother into words. Each of us holds our own memories and moments that make up the fabric of the iconic Shirley Barr. Born January 11th 1932 in Montreal, she grew up with a profound love for family which she carried throughout her life. Sister, wife, mother, grandmother, were all roles she held with the upmost value. She married the love of her life Ed Barr in 1961 in Montreal. Ed and Shirley were so deeply intertwined that it is almost impossible to describe one with out the other. It was that unconditional, unwavering love that became the foundation on which our family was built. Often seen around Oakville, holding hands, sharing a meal and always sporting matching sunnies, Ed and Shirley serve as an example of what true love looks like.

When people talk about my nana often the first thing that comes to mind is her smile. It could brighten your day while simultaneously radiating such a warmth and comfort that only Shirley could provide. It made you feel as though there was no one else in the world she was happier to see. Shirley was one of the strongest people to touch all of our lives. Her strength, her generosity and her spirit will be a legacy that sets a standard for us all. She fought fiercely for what she believed in and was a corner stone of love and support for everyone she touched.

Shirley passed peacefully surrounded by her children Mark and Cathy on Friday, June 4th at the age of 89. A deeply religious woman, she passed knowing that her husband Ed was patiently waiting for her, as he always was, on the other side of this life. We miss her every moment, everyday, but take comfort in knowing she is happy and resting in peace. We continue to learn from her everyday and her memory lives in our hearts vibrantly and forever.

We ask that in place of flowers, you make a donation in her name to Parkinson's Canada and continue Shirley's legacy of charity and compassion.
