Obituary

It is with profound sadness that Sallie's family announce her passing at home in her bed after a long and determined battle with pancreatic cancer. Sallie was the best friend, soul mate and wife of Charlie to whom she was married for 54 years. She was the loving mother of Julie (Jeff Roy), Nicole (Angelo Perri) and Charles. She was Nana to Pierre and Nathalie Roy. She is survived by her brother Barry (Jane) of St John's NL and sisters Heather Shortus (Keith) of Australia and Gail Krija (Peter) of Hamilton ON.

She was the eldest daughter of Scott and Lorraine Mackay (native Montrealers) and was born in Fredericton & raised in Rothesay N.B. She graduated from Netherwood in 1959 and from the Montreal General Hospital in 1961 as an X-Ray technician.

Sallie was well known for her positive attitude, inner strength & self discipline and yet she cared a great deal about people. She maintained life-long friendships with her grade school & Netherwood friends as well as with the people she met & roomed with in Montreal. She loved her extended family & worked hard at maintaining regular contact with all of them.

How she handled her 14 month battle with cancer is a lesson for all: she was so courageous and never once complained about the fate that had befallen her and maintained an incredible attitude through it all. From the very beginning her motto was: "It is what it is".

She will always be remembered as a very accomplished duplicate bridge player having become life master many years ago. She enjoyed playing competitive bridge & had many partners. Many of these go back 43 years from a group better known as the DDD. She participated in many Canadian & American National & Regional tournaments and truly enjoyed the rush that these provided.

Sallie enjoyed many sports and for many years was an active curler & tennis player. She was a long time member of the Caledon Ski Club and golfed regularly at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club, where she served a term as Lady Golf Captain and the Bellair Country Club in Florida where she spent 25 glorious winters at her gulf-side condo on Sand Key, Clearwater.

Sallie and Charlie travelled extensively. Over the years, they visited 47 countries, every Canadian province and 38 US states. This was done by way of 15 ocean and river cruises and numerous land tours.

A private funeral service will be held for immediate family members only. A celebration of life reception will be held at the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club at 3pm on August 12, 2018.

The family would also like to thank the Oakville Palliative team and Doctor Lynne Benjamin and Nurse Angela Tranquilla in particular for their compassionate support during these trying times.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask you to consider making a charitable donation to the Wellspring Cancer Support Foundation of Oakville or to Ian Anderson House.
