Obituary

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Ruth Ann Pepall (nee Scott), beloved wife of Winsor Pepall for 60 years. Daughter of George H. Scott and Grace Hahn. Sister to George H. (Sally Jo) Scott Jr., and Judith (Arthur) James. Loving mother of Andrew Pepall and Michael (Lisa) Pepall, "Nonnie" to Daniel and Anna.

Ruth Ann was born in East Orange, New Jersey and moved with her parents to Toronto in 1941. She graced the halls of John Ross Robertson and BSS. She toured England in 1953 as the solo soprano for the BSS choir as part of the celebrations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She was honoured to sing in cathedrals across the country including some of the oldest and largest at Winchester and Canterbury. She graduated from the University of Toronto -Trinity College - with a bachelor's degree in Art and Archeology. She also completed the curriculum for a Type A Vocal Music Certificate and was awarded a certificate as a Permanent Specialist in Vocal Music. In 1960 she became a Canadian citizen which allowed her to begin teaching at Oakwood Collegiate in Toronto. The following year she met Winsor Pepall, also a graduate of Trinity, and they wed in Toronto in 1962.

Ruth Ann's artistic talents ran deep no matter what she focused her energy on, whether it was pastel portraits, needlepoint, quilt work, stained glass, interior design or genealogy. For many years there was always a Golden Retriever nearby. She was active on a variety of courts, courses, tables and trails for tennis, badminton, golf, bridge and skiing. Christmas was a favourite time of year, with a home full of light and love.

One of her most enduring passions was the annual musical production of Cabaret at the Oakville Club. She started out as a songbird and dancer but when the director stepped down, she stepped in. What followed was more than 25 years of shows, and each year the cast would thank her with a plant for her garden. Some of those plants today are 12-foot-high rhododendrons and lush azaleas with branches that burst with stunning blooms in Spring. Ruth Ann's garden is a mirror of herself – filled with life, love and song.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Spring 2023 on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Oakville  Hospital Foundation -Parsons Bursary or the Crohn's and Colitis Canada.
