IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ruth Anne
Nowlan
October 17, 1962 – January 24, 2025
Ruth Anne Nowlan passed away on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital at the age of 62. Ruth was a loving mother to Ryan, loved sister of Katherine (Don Geisler) and Michael (Christine), and loved aunt of Jessica (Xavier), Samuel, Jocelyn, Joel, and James. She was predeceased by her parents, Dwight and Pat Nowlan. She will be remembered by Gordon Glenn.
Ruth was born in Charlottetown, PEI on October 17, 1962. At the age of 3 she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes thus beginning a lifelong battle with the disease. Early on, Ruth displayed her tenacity, drive, and ambitions and never accepted the word "no" if she really wanted something. This included raising funds from friends and family to travel to the Philippines as a teenager with Teen Missions to build an amphitheatre. She drove herself to excell in school and received full scholarships for her Food Science degree at the University of Guelph, which included being one of the few students to achieve 100% in "Killer Chemistry". After pursuing a career at Weston's Bakeries developing new breads and pastries, as well as overseeing the build of a new plant, Ruth switched gears and went into banking with the Bank of Montreal. During this time Ruth also completed her MBA at McMaster University. Around this same time, Ruth met and married Gordon, who she met at Camp Kwasind.
Despite medical advice, Ruth fulfilled her wish to have a child and was a loving, proud and devoted mother to Ryan. Her health issues meant she had to leave the workforce, but she found fulfillment and meaning as an involved mother, often volunteering for school outings and in-school programs. Later, she would volunteer to teach English as a Second Language as a part of Central Baptist Church. Ruth was also involved in various clubs, and she participated in various book clubs and church groups, some of which she hosted herself. She was an avid reader able to go through books in a matter of hours, a scrapbooker who spent lavishly on materials she used to make beautiful photo albums, her gift to the family she would leave behind, a record of her life and their shared experiences. Ruth was also a lover of cats beginning with Finnegan, who was adopted when Ruth was 5, and ending with Kuna who offered comfort and companionship in her final months. Ruth was known for her humour and charm, complemented by her wit, which she used to liven up events and gatherings. Ruth had a strong faith and pursued her understanding of God in her life until the end. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends.
