DOVENOR, (Barbara) RUTH
Peacefully, with family by her side on Sunday June 18, 2023, at OTMH in her 92nd year.
Ruth was the daughter of Mary (Booth) and Hiram Smith of Oakville and was predeceased by her brothers Lawrie, Robert, and Frank. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Alison (Tim) and Owen and much-loved grandchildren John (Susan) and Shannon.
Ruth spent much of her life in Oakville and was very proud of her family's founding roots in the town. After graduating OTHS, she went on to pursue a career in teaching until her children were born. When her children were older, she returned to teaching and pursued a BA from McMaster University. Later, she retrained as an office assistant working at Daymond Manufacturing and later at Craftmatic where she formed cherished friendships that would last the rest of her life.
Ruth was a Life member of the O&DKC volunteering in secretarial roles and other capacities as needed. She was always ready to lend a hand. At the annual show, she would always make time to watch her beloved Boston Terrier group.
Ruth, an avid and passionate gardener, created an impressive shade garden oasis, collecting over 100 different hosta whose names she would recite as she toured her garden until her health deteriorated and she was no longer able to care for them.
As a lifelong member of the congregation of St Jude's church, she joined the Garden Guild, where she cared passionately for her "blue" garden for many years, creating a special spot in the community garden.
Ruth overcame many challenges in her life, making countless sacrifices for her family to give them the best life she could. Her strength, courage and indomitable fighting spirit served her well her entire life.
Special thanks and deep gratitude to the staff at OTMH for all their care and compassion shown her in her final days and to her care worker who brought joy to the last 3 years of her life.
Friends and family will be received at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home Sunday June 25 from 4 pm to 6 pm and Monday June 26 at 11:00 followed by a service and internment at St Jude's Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made in Ruth's name, to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
