Ronald (Ron) Cedric Read died peacefully on January 7 2019, 19 days after his 94th birthday. He is survived by his third wife Marilyn Sloane; his children Helen and Colin, his daughter-in-law Rosemarie Harris; stepchildren Gillian Burns, Malcolm Harris, and Julia Hynes; his grandchildren Savannah and Kaya Harris-Read; and step-grandchildren Murray and Laura Burns, Amanda and Sophie Harris. Ron was born and raised in Croydon, England. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, and then accepted a scholarship to the University of Cambridge. He married Eileen Vera Propert, and in 1950 they emigrated to Jamaica and he joined the Mathematics Department of the University of the West Indies. In 1970 Ron and family emigrated to Canada and he became a Professor at the University of Waterloo. He published many mathematical books and papers during his lifetime. He was an accomplished musician and played many instruments, some of which he also built. In 1985 he married his second wife Marie Harris, herself a notable pianist, and moved to Oakville, where he played violin and viola in the Hollier Quartet and the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. He has composed four works for orchestra and several pieces for smaller groups. Though Ron's primary passions were mathematics and music, his innate curiosity led him to explore many areas of knowledge. To list a few: he founded the Jamaica Caving Club in 1957; published a book on Tangram puzzles; invented the Olympic Flag String Figure (see YouTube); and enjoyed reading, dancing, and travel. His latter years were spent very happily at Delmanor Glen Abbey with his third wife, Marilyn Sloane, where his pleasure was to play popular songs of the 20s, 30s, and 40s for the residents two or three times a week, all from memory. His final performance was to play Christmas carols for a Delmanor event just days before his death. He will be remembered as a prodigious musical talent; an exceptional mathematical mind; an interesting, engaged, and loving father, grandfather, and husband.
