Obituary

Roger passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024 in Oakville at the age of 94.

Beloved husband to the late Joan (nee Skinner), cherished father to Scott (Leslie), Gregory (Caroline) and Donna (Gordon).
Proud Poppa to Ashley (Adam), Alex (Austin), Meghan, Sarah (Keaton) and Cameron, Robert Piche, Nathan (Brittany)Piche + Skylar Currie and Great-Poppa to Bentley, Aiden, Kinsley, Barrett + Peyton.
He is predeceased by his father Arthur George Johnson, his mother Edith Emily (nee Cox) and his brother Derek Johnson.

Roger was born on January 18, 1930, in Toronto, Ontario and moved into the Village of Swansea (west end Toronto) at age 6.
There he thrived as a boy + teenager in this small, charming community, always with his older protective brother Derek.
It was in Swansea where he met his cherished wife Joan, when he moved onto the same street, living only two houses away. He always knew she was the one for him.
Roger would 'borrow' her bike and she would always find it on his front lawn.
Roger + Joan enjoyed their young dating life, with time at the cottage, family parties + two Sunday roast beef dinners, 3pm at the Johnsons + then 6pm at the Skinners.
During this time, he formed many life-long cherished friendships.
He had a wonderful sense of humour, with a great heartfelt laugh, always with a joke or two.

Throughout his high school career at Runneymede Collegiate, 'Roger the Dodger' excelled in many sports, including Track + Field, Football + Rugby, Hockey + Basketball.
Roger had a passion for music all through his life, singing + playing piano into his 90's.
He performed on the Horace Heidt live stage show at Maple Leaf Gardens with an impromptu performance (he had to body check a potential singer off stage). The Toronto Star praised his rendition of 'Smoke gets in your Eyes'.

Roger + Joan married in 1956, and they raised their 3 kids in Clarkson, Montreal + Oakville.
He was a sun worshipper and looked forward to his yearly trips to Florida with the family and enjoyed summers in the backyard pool with family + friends.
Roger was a strong supporter of his 3 children and was immensely proud of them + their accomplishments.
He loved time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and admired their courage to follow their dreams for a happy, fulfilling life.

He began his career working for his father's company, Belmar Soups and developed new products for
Mix-aid. He moved to sales working at McLean Hunter Publications, and then to Southam Business where he started an incredible career managing the Toronto + Montreal Gift Trade shows for many years.
He then transitioned to trade show services, working for Panex Show Services.
He was a leader in the Trade Show industry, travelled to the USA + India and received many awards over his career.

In his retirement, he enjoyed a weekly round of golf into his mid-80's, played squash, enjoyed curling and cheering for his hometown Leafs.
He loved going to the Horse races + the casinos with Joan + dear friends and always came home a winner.

He always had a great story to tell about his life's adventures.
He had incredible strength, was hard-working and was truly one of a kind.

The family would like to thank the kind staff at Churchill Place + Kensington, and PSW's from Home Instead Senior Care who aided Dad in his final years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. West, Oakville, (one block east of Kerr St.) on June 1, 2024, from 12 noon – 2:00 pm.

Roger was a generous supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society and the Sunnybrook Foundation , as he, his wife Joan and daughter-in-law Susan were greatly affected by the disease.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to one of the above or any charity of your choice.
