Obituary

Robert Murray Herod (Bob)

Peacefully at home surrounded by family on June 25th at the age of 91.

Bob knew what was important in life. Family was always at the core, and he had a big one. Beloved husband of Nancy, father to Suzanne, Michael, Ashley, Melissa and stepdaughters Lindsay and Fionna; grandfather to Courtnay, Sarah, Matthew, Abbey, Siri, Harlow, Primm, Charlotte, Sophia, Isla and Eli.

Here are just a few of things we will never forget:

Bob wore an iron ring.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Bob attended The University of Toronto and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He built a career in the steel industry and after being laid off (“the best thing that ever happened to me”) took control of his future and founded his own company as an Agent for Steel working throughout the USA, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Bob valued relationships and never hesitated to follow a lead. His can-do attitude, calm and direct nature, and being the glue that holds it all together live on in his daughter Suzanne. “Just pick up the phone”.

Bob could build anything.

And he would if you asked. You had to be careful what you said because if you wanted or needed something, like, say, a side table or a built-in library, Bob would have it done by the end of the weekend (with every tool and shred of sawdust neatly tidied away). Bob leaves his craftsmanship and skill to his son Michael. “Keep your tools sharp.”

Bob was an athlete.

Bob grew up skating and playing shinny hockey on the frozen waters of Hamilton Bay and was a varsity wrestler at university. Raising a family he skied, sailed, and enjoyed squash and golf (and was always up for a quick post-game beer). Bob lifted weights every day until last week. He leaves Ashley in charge of reminding us all to look after our physical wellbeing. “I’m just going for a quick stretch” (which apparently meant a nap – naps are important).

Bob made things happen.

Bob knew anything was possible if you put your mind to it and worked hard. He inspired those around him by always being the first to stand up and help. He carved his own path and built a life that encapsulated everything that was important to him. If you shared your dreams, no matter how ambitious they might seem, he’d be intrigued and full of questions. Bob’s entrepreneurial spirit, willingness to take risks and do the work to make your dreams come true live on in Melissa. “Well…why dontcha?”

Bob had fun.

Twenty-five years ago, Bob began life with Nancy and together they danced. They travelled the world on one adventure after another before returning home to family, friends, sports and easy-going fun. He gave Lindsay and Fionna the gift of loving their mother truly and deeply and being a friend and pillar in times of uncertainty. Bob set an example - to all his children and grandchildren - of what it means to be a loving, caring, giving husband and true gentleman. So many nights after dinner, he and Nancy would roll up the carpet and dance. Their love shone bright for all to see.

To all his grandchildren, he leaves all of this, and memories:

The crackle of a woodburning fire, jazz on the radio, and his beloved Tiger Cats on TV. The feeling of a scratchy sweater hugging a small cheek. A world warmed by handmade artefacts, from cabinets and armoires to cutting boards and salad bowls. Working happily at jobs down by the river. Telling jokes (some better than others) and heartfelt laughter. Setting the table (albeit a bit wonky), lighting the candles. The firm, clear, commanding call of “Quiet!” over a loud, lively, cacophony of voices: “Dinner’s ready”. Calling us to the table. Calling us together. It’s a call we will won’t forget.

Bob did not like a fuss, but he did love a party. Please join us in celebrating a life well lived on Thursday September 17th from 2-5pm at The Oakville Club, 56 Water Street, Oakville, Ontario, L6J 2Y3.
