Hanna

The Church of Saint John the Baptist
Starts at 11:00 am (Eastern time)
It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Robert Michael Hanna on January 1, 2026, at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Grand-Mère, Quebec, on August 29,1934, Robert was the son of George Hanna (1954) and Emma Aziz (2007).
Husband of fifty-two years to Heike Emma Hanna (née Brodersen) who passed away in 2016, his partner in life and love. Father to Joanne Deidre Bolté (Paul) and their children, Victoria and Zachary; Robert Richard Hanna (Amy) and their children, Timothy, Sara, and Annie. Robert will be dearly missed by his sister Elizabeth Frances Hanna (Malcolm Morrison 2024) and brother William Alexander Hanna (Barbara). Robert was predeceased by his brother George Peter Hanna (2017).
Robert studied Mechanical Engineering at McGill University. He was President of his fraternity and President of his graduating Engineering class.
Robert and his brother George took over the family shoe manufacturing business as young men. After many years of success, the industry changed and the company was sold. Robert remained in the shoe business a few years longer and then switched careers to boat design and manufacturing. Robert had one more career move to make and at the age of 60, took his Canadian Securities Course and became an investment broker which he enjoyed for almost two decades.
Apart from work, Robert had a hand in establishing the Women’s Healthy Heart Initiative at the MUHC. After his wife Heike’s struggle with heart disease, Robert felt that more attention needed to be drawn to women’s heart health and that women needed to be more aware of their heart health and heart disease prevention.
Robert was very dedicated to his own family and had very close relationships with his mother, siblings, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed taking time and learning about everyone’s travels, work, school, challenges, and successes.
Robert was an avid golfer and curler. He started golfing at a young age in Grand-Mère, sneaking onto the course with his father in the early morning hours before school. Robert and Heike joined the Beaconsfield Golf Club when they moved to Pointe Claire, Quebec. Here they met many friends whose company they enjoyed on and off the course. Many of the same friends joined Robert on the curling rink. Just as important as time with friends playing sports was the time afterwards, enjoying a beer and a few laughs.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers at Lakeshore General Hospital in Montreal and OakvilleTrafalgar Hospital for Robert’s cancer care and treatment. Special gratitude is also extended to the staff at Sunrise Beaconsfield who welcomed Robert as a resident in 2023 and in 2024, Sunrise Oakville. Robert was on the Reminiscence Floor at Sunrise Oakville and the team took excellent care of him. They were respectful, very caring, and treated him like family. We are so grateful.
A memorial service will take place on Monday, July 20th at 11:00 am at The Church of Saint John the Baptist at 233 Sainte-Claire Avenue in Pointe Claire. A reception will follow at the Beaconsfield Golf Club at 49 Golf Avenue in Pointe Claire. A private burial will take place the following day, July 21st, in Grand-Mère. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Women’s Healthy Heart Initiative, attn: Wendy Wray, 5100 de Maisonneuve ouest, suite 606, Montreal, Quebec, H4A 3T2.
