Richard Nelson Seibel
On Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at the age of 66, Richard died peacefully in his home in Oakville, surrounded by his family and his everlasting sense of humor. After a long battle with muscular dystrophy and a brief battle with cancer, Richard bravely chose to end his suffering through the medical assistance in dying program.
Richard was a beloved husband to Denise, and loving father to Patrick and his partner Danielle; Elizabeth and her partner Evan; Tammy, and Rob. Son of the late Marian Elizabeth (Evans) Seibel. Brother to Carol and Linda and her husband Wally. Uncle to Rebecca and her husband Bryan; Josh and his wife Stephanie; Matt; Sarah and her husband David; Holly and Kyle.
Richard dedicated his life to his family and his 46-year career in the coated abrasives industry; celebrating 25 years with VSM Abrasives in January 2022 as he began semi-retirement. He was admired by his colleagues for his wealth of industry knowledge and his ongoing role as a mentor and friend. Beginning his career at Thomas Abrasives as a teenager, he then went on to become General Manager of that same company which would eventually become VSM Abrasives, having worked his way through production and sales. The knowledge, insight, and experience he gained through his dedication and hard work is unparalleled in the industry.
Equally unparalleled was his dedication to his family. Through good times and bad, in better and worse health, Richard never stopped supporting his family in whatever ways he could. His love for a good joke shone through even the hardest and darkest days; a lightheartedness he held on to until the very end. His wisdom, support, encouragement and love will be deeply missed by all those who knew him as a husband, a dad, a mentor and a friend.
Cremation has taken place, and with respect for Richard's wishes, there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, for those who may wish, a donation in Richard's name can be made to a local food bank.
