It is with profound sadness that we announce that Peter passed away suddenly of cardiac arrest on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in Oakville. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Flying Officer Kenneth Dean Marlatt who died in a flying accident July 1, 1950 and his sister Rosalys (Toots). The original family home was 43 Bond Street, Oakville. Peter's father owned the Marlatt Tannery Company on the shores of Lake Ontario for many years before he sold it to A.J. Clarke and Company. Peter is survived by his wife Sandra, his children Catharine Marlatt of Vancouver, Christine Janzen of Edmonton, Ken Marlatt of Uxbridge and Constance Marlatt (Sasha) of Toronto and their mother Gloria Marlatt, one nephew Tom and Tom's children Matthew and Jessica. He is also survived by his step-children, Craig Ryall (Dawn O'Connor) of Calgary and Kristine Wright (Darrin) of Ajax. Peter will be missed his grandchildren Elizabeth (Powel Szopa) and Sarah (James Dunderdale) of Vancouver Island, Brett and Jaylene of Edmonton, Grace, Alice and Norah of Toronto and his step-grandchildren Quinn and George of Calgary and Mallory and Jocelyn of Ajax. Peter has four great-grandchildren, Kai and Annika, Emmelyn and Arwen all of Vancouver Island. Peter attended high school in Oakville and graduated from Central Tech in Toronto in 1945. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a Certificate Course in Business in 1947. He also earned his Private Pilot's Licence in 1947. He was in both the Canadian Army and the RCAF, earning his "Wings" at Centralia in 1951. Peter flew both Harvards and Vampire jet aircraft. He went into the financial sector in 1957, eventually owning his own company Marlatt Insurance Agencies and Aldon Financial Services. Peter spent 50 years in the financial business with Manulife Financial. In 1990, he achieved the distinction of the 5 Star Master Builder, given to those dedicated to the highest professional ethics, and to the best interests of their clients. In 1995 he was also awarded the John Rodger Memorial Award, given by Manulife Financial which recognizes outstanding leadership qualities in the areas of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to excellence in both business and community activities. In 2005 a Peter Marlatt Scholarship was established at George Brown-Toronto City College to recognize Peter's years of dedicated service at Manulife Financial and this scholarship will provide student awards in perpetuity. Peter was a member of Life Underwriters Association of Canada, Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table and a founding member of the Conferences of Advanced Life Underwriting and a founding member of Halton Trafalgar Estate Planners Association. He obtained his CLU, CFP, EPC, CEB and CH.F.C. Certification. He was a successful businessman who served as a mentor for many individuals along the way. He looked for the good in people and always brought out the best in them. Peter was a man of high principles. One of his strengths was his ability to lead in a business environment. He enjoyed the day to day operations in his business. His outlook on life was that of an untiring optimist. Peter was a well known member of the insurance industry. One of his proudest moments was when he was asked by five Senators to speak in Ottawa on a Tax Bill that was eventually withdrawn after Peter's explanation of how the Tax Bill would have a negative effect on women as beneficiaries of Life Insurance. He looked for the best in others and gave the best of himself. One of his passions and love in life was working and the associated travelling. He truly believed that it was a great privilege to work and all people should view work in this manner. He was and energetic friend and co-worker and was always the first to offer help to a friend or neighbor. He had an iron will, strong sense of family and second family. Peter had a great sense of humour and loved all creatures great and small, especially his Airedale "Harry". He has a great love of books and world history. Many of you had insightful discussions with him on history, politics and insurance. Peter was active in his community, cub leader, director of the local Boy Scouts Association and also worked for many organizations: cancer, heart, the Salvation Army and Planned Giving for the Oakville Hospital. With his close and dear friend Dr. John Yoshioka and after a glass or two of scotch, they decided they should get to know Canada better. A decision was made to "go fishing". Their first trip was to Labrador, followed by trips to Hudson Bay, the northwest into the Yukon and a lot of fishing in the Queen Charlotte Islands. Yes, they did catch fish. Later, Paul Mace another good friend joined in to get to know Canada as well. Paul always took the first day to adjust and one trip he got "kissed" by a sea lion. The Marlatt family took up skiing. They skied in Grey Rocks in Quebec, Austria, Switzerland, Calgary and the United States. They made these trips for world knowledge, the people and of course, the skiing. Peter and Sandra travelled the world together from Antarctica to Zimbabwe in South Africa, North Africa, the Amazon, Vietnam, Russia, China, and Europe, the Greek Islands, Turkey, U.A.E., India, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific Islands, Malaysia and many places in between. Peter was especially fond of cruising. Peter had many years of enjoyment at Lorimer Lake where the fishing skills were passed down to genertations. Constance would fish but read a book and this is where Ken caught his first lake trout. Road repair was always necessary due to beaver dams. Cathy, as the oldest came to help but also tried to push her Dad into the water. Christy's interest was horses and the challenge of endurance riding. He had been a member of Knox Presbyterian Church for many years, both on the board of Managers and later as an Elder. After six years as a Trustee for the National Presbyterian Church, another challenge came his way. At a funeral service, Peter was introduced to the Reverend Cheryl Fricker of St. Aidan's Anglican Church. This was the Church that helpd his Mother in her later years. Peter volunteered his help and became a part of the rebuilding program. There is a wheelbarrow at the church affectionately known as "St. Peter". Peter was an active member of the Kinsmen and Rotary Clubs where he was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow award. Peter died as he lived, with great dignity, integrity and courage. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed by his family, extended family, friends and clients. He had a caring heart, generous spirit and a lifelong friendship with clients. Peter had an outgoing personality, devotion to helping others, highly respected in his field of work and he strongly believed that fairness and good intentions were the key ingredients to one's success; always be true to yourself and others. Peter can now have a fireside chat with the Colonel and his best four legged friend "Harry" at his feet. Cremation has taken place and there will be a Celebration of Life for Peter in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donations can be made to St. Aidan's Anglican Church, 318 Queen Mary Drive, Oakville, Ontario L6K 3L6 https://niagaraanglican.ca/parish/st-aidans-oakville or to a charity of your choice in Peter's name.
