Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peter John Kaps on February 20, 2026.

Peter was born in Toronto and was the only son of his parents, Peter Kaps and Margaret Kaps. He grew up in Toronto and later earned a degree in Marketing from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University).

Peter began his career as a furniture salesperson at Eaton’s flagship store in downtown Toronto. When Eaton’s was later taken over by Sears, he continued his work there. Peter had a natural gift for working with people. Customers trusted him, and many returned over the years because of his knowledge, honesty, and warm personality. He was recognized three times as one of Eaton’s top furniture salespeople across Canada.

Peter met the love of his life, Mei Yu, while working at Eaton’s. Their shared appreciation for fine furniture made by Gibbard first brought them together, and that connection soon grew into a loving marriage. They were married on June 19, 1999, at Knox Presbyterian Church in Oakville by Rev. Harry McMilliams.

Peter loved his church and community. He served as an elder at Knox Presbyterian Church and generously gave his time helping with church activities, including caring for the grounds and clearing snow so that others could attend services safely. He also volunteered at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.

Peter enjoyed golfing and fishing and was a great lover of dogs. He and Mei once had a beloved dog named Chinca (“Chinese Canadian”). Together, Peter and Mei travelled extensively around the world. One of Peter’s most memorable adventures was bungee jumping near Victoria Falls in Africa. Their most recent journey together was a 182-day around-the-world cruise in 2024.

Peter will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to family and friends, and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Mei Yu would like to express her heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the love, prayers, and support received from friends, family, and the community over the years during Peter’s illness. Through many difficult times, Peter showed strength and resilience and was able to rally again and again.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn Street, Oakville, Ontario. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church, Oakville.
