Obituary

With love and sadness, we acknowledge the passing of Patricia Williams, at the age of 97. Pat  died peacefully at Allendale Long Term Care Home.  She was the beloved mother of Elizabeth Williams (Norm) and Susan Williams (André) and a devoted grandmother to Rebecca Basciano (Germain) and Sarah Basciano (Alex) as well as Armand Mech (Carolynne) and Eugene Mech.

Born in Liverpool, England, Pat was the only child of Jane Elizabeth (Price) DeMoul originally from Wales, and Henry Francis Garrett DeMoul originally from Ireland.  Pat's independence began developing early in life due to the challenges of losing her father at the age of two and living through the Liverpool air raids of WWII, often listening to Winston Churchill's speeches on the wireless.

In 1958, Pat immigrated to Canada with her husband Bob where they raised their family in Brampton. Later she lived in High Park and Oakville.  A strong independent woman, Pat followed in the footsteps of her resilient mother, whose example guided her throughout her life.

Over the years, Pat's career spanned various roles, including being an administrative assistant at Queen's Park with the Ministry of Natural Resources.  Her dedication led her to become the highest level of executive assistant to the Assistant Deputy Minister, and, in another job, she worked passionately on Indigenous land claims.  Pat had a widespread, deep interest in Canadian history, including the Indigenous peoples, and had an unwavering commitment to social justice.  Pat was also an advocate for gender equality in the workplace.

Pat was a life-long learner, her love and appreciation of literature being extraordinary.  She pursued several Literature and Writing courses at the University of Toronto.  Her intellectual curiosity and appreciation for storytelling were hallmarks of her personality.

Pat formed friendships with people of all ages and backgrounds in both Canada and England and warmly welcomed everyone into her home. Known for her wisdom, sharp wit and dry humour, she brought warmth and joy to those around her. She enjoyed travelling, cycling, tennis, duplicate bridge, Scrabble, Toastmasters, crossword puzzles and music.  A voracious reader, she delighted in books of many genres, and liked to start each day with The Globe and Mail and a cup of tea.

The family kindly requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society in her memory.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.
