Obituary

We are deeply saddened to announce that Pat Shotton passed away on July 7 surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband James Andrew Shotton in May 2025. She is survived by her sister Mary and many other loving family members. Pat and Jim travelled the world together for many years: from vineyard, to winery, to tasting room, and back again. May they rest in peace together.

Born in Montreal, Quebec to Ernest E. Saunders and Janine R. Saunders, Pat trained originally as a soil scientist and burial ground archaeologist at Carleton University in Ottawa. She went on to earn her Master’s of Library Science degree at Western University in London, Ontario as the field was becoming a form of information technology. She joined the Canadian Public Health Association and travelled extensively as the Manager of the National AIDS Clearing House, providing education on AIDS to relevant bodies in countries around the globe. She then headed up IT management for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and served there until it closed. In retirement, she managed her own private company and investments, and looked after Jim as he battled Parkinson’s disease. They made a formidable team as they cruised the seven seas and sought to visit every wine-growing region in the world.

Pat used to say that no arthropod existed that could defeat her. She was fearless in disposing of snakes that invaded her house, and razor-sharp in her recall of facts and figures in many contexts. She loved puzzling and cooking, and hated popular TV. We will all miss her terribly.

At Pat’s request, cremation has taken place. A book of condolences is available on the website of the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home in Oakville. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton and Halton would be greatly appreciated.
