Obituary

In Loving Memory of Mykola (Nick) Sidey

Mykola (Nick) Sidey lived a life devoted to serving others. His compassion, generosity, and quiet strength touched countless lives, both professionally and personally.

Before immigrating to Canada in 2002 with his wife, Lucy, and their sons, Serhiy and Vlad, Mykola worked as an anesthesiologist for almost 20 years in Ukraine. After arriving in Canada, he demonstrated his remarkable determination by completing the education and training required to become a registered nurse. In 2004, Mykola began working in the Intensive Care Unit at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, where he served with dedication and compassion for more than twenty years, with his last shift ending at 7:30pm on June 23rd, 2026.

Mykola lived a modest and humble life, finding his greatest joy in his family. He was a devoted father and took great pride in his sons. He also maintained a close and loving relationship with his son, Victor, and daughter, Sasha, from his first marriage. He spoke often and proudly of all his children's accomplishments. He was especially grateful when Sasha moved to Canada with her two sons, allowing him to spend precious time with his grandchildren. Although Victor and his family remained far away, they were never far from Mykola's thoughts or his heart.

Mykola had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome and valued. His gentle manner, warm smile, and willingness to share a funny story or thoughtful political discussion over a cup of coffee made every conversation memorable. The friendships he built throughout his life became lifelong bonds, and he treated his friends as though they were family. He was always generous with his time and never hesitated to lend a helping hand to friends, neighbours, or loved ones.

Family remained at the center of Mykola's life. For many years, before his mother's passing, he flew her from Ukraine to Canada each summer so they could spend several months together enjoying the warmth and beauty of the season. These visits were among the moments he treasured most.

An avid outdoors man, Mykola looked forward each year to fishing and hunting trips with close friends, skilfully navigating Ontario's remote wilderness with the same confidence he displayed in the city's streets. He was also an exceptional cook and a master of the barbecue, taking great pride in preparing meals and sharing the bounty of his latest catch with family and friends.

Mykola was happiest when he was with his beloved wife, Lucy. His eyes would glimmer in her presence and his love and admiration for her never faded with time. Together, they built a beautiful life grounded in unwavering devotion, laughter, and partnership. Through life's joys and challenges, they stood side by side, always finding strength and comfort in one another. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, and they recently celebrated the milestone of their 31st wedding anniversary. Those who knew them could see the genuine affection they had for one another.

Starting 2015, Mykola once again answered the call to serve others when he joined the Canada-Ukraine foundation medical missions to Ukraine during the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Drawing upon his extensive medical knowledge and experience, he helped care for wounded Ukrainian soldiers, assisting with complex reconstructive surgeries for those suffering from both devastating physical injuries caused by sniper fire and explosions and the profound psychological trauma of war. His willingness to return multiple times over several years and serve those in need reflected the compassion, courage, and sense of duty that defined his life.

Above all else, Mykola sought to lead by example. Through his kindness, humility, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others, he showed his family the values by which he lived every day.

Mykola passed away peacefully on June 24th at the age of 67 survived by his beloved wife Lucy and a devoted father to his children Victor (Marina), Sasha, Serhiy (Sarah) and Vlad. He was a proud grandfather to Artem, Roman, Vladimir and Andrei. He is also survived by his sister Alla and is niece Nataliya. He is predeceased by his mother Halyna and his father Vasyl. His passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him, but his legacy of compassion, service, and quiet generosity will endure. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives he touched.
