Mike Gillatt was born in Bournemouth (UK) on December 30, 1941, to Allan and Kay. He was six when the family moved to South Africa.
As a young man he joined the accounting department at Aberdare Cables. His manager recognized his potential, arranged for his enrolment in further studies and the company covered the associated costs. Mike worked each day, studied each night and sat examinations every June and December for five years ultimately qualifying as a member of The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of London, UK. Thereafter the company once again sponsored his studies enabling him to earn his Bachelor of Commerce (B Comm) degree and later his B Comm Honours. The generosity of this company set Mike on the path to his future. Over the next 57 years he enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Chief Financial Officer in a variety of businesses.
Along with his passion for spreadsheets, Mike adored his family: his beloved "Lass" Merle; his son Peter; his daughter Jacquie and his granddaughter Venecia. He also had a special affection for the many pets that became part of the family over the years, including four donkeys acquired for a little girl who begged for a pony every year. The family was fortunate to travel together to many places including Mike's favourite destination, the Kruger National Park, where they delighted in watching African wildlife in its natural habitat. He loved nature, especially birds and Peter continues to share that passion with a keen eye and a good camera. Over the years Mike and Merle continued to explore the world together including enjoying ten cruises.
In 2002 Mike and Merle immigrated to Canada. They embraced their new country, making friends with local residents while also building a close-knit community with fellow expatriates. Before long Mike felt ready to return to work and accepted a temporary position as an Accountant at DEMAG. The role soon became permanent and he remained with the company for 11 years. When DEMAG decided to relocate its operations back to Germany Mike took on the responsibility of winding up the Canadian site.
In 2013 having finally retired, Mike decided to try his hand at art. Entirely self-taught he discovered a hobby that brought him great joy. Through Artworks his paintings were exhibited at Oakville Town Hall, local community centres and business reception areas.
Mike's quiet, gentle nature won the hearts of everyone who knew him. He faced his final year with remarkable courage, never complaining and always expressing gratitude for the amazing life he had lived.
The family is deeply grateful for the wonderful support received during Mike's illness and for the many beautiful messages sent from around the world following his passing. Mike's family and friends will miss him dearly.
Please join us at 11am on Friday, June 26, 2026 at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home ( 64 Lakeshore Rd W, Oakville, Ontario) for his funeral service.
Donations in Mike's memory are gratefully accepted to Ian Anderson House or the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides.
