Obituary

Michael Sudbury

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Mike on November 13, 2024 in Oakville, Ontario. Loving husband of Pat (deceased) for over 60 years. Treasured father to Jenn (Andrew) and Stephen (deceased). Beloved brother to George and Patrick (deceased), and brother-in-law to Doug (deceased) and Linn of Sudbury, and Barbara of Neston, England, caring uncle to several nieces and nephews, and dear friend to many. Son of Charles and Norah Sudbury (deceased).

Mike grew up in London, and attended Sheffield University, graduating as a metallurgical engineer. After a few adventures cycling around England and joining a crew clearing former battlefields in Germany, Mike sailed for Canada in 1952, and traveled by train from Montreal to Sudbury to begin his career at Falconbridge Nickel Mines, a 45-year adventure. He met and married Pat in June 1959. They raised their family in Sudbury and Oakville. They spent 4 years living in Bermuda, returning to Oakville in 1988. Mike visited almost every continent during his time at Falconbridge. Pat and Mike also loved to travel, and they saw many countries by air and sea; highlights included touring through Spain with Mike's Spanish club, ziplining in Costa Rica (in their 70s!), cruises in Norway, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal, and many visits to see family and friends in Canada, the US and the UK. After retiring in 1997, Mike continued to consult for over a decade, and presented papers at various conferences into his mid-80s. Mike was a real gentleman, kind, caring and curious, and loved a deep discussion on climate, politics, history and mining. He also had a great sense of humour, a love of gardening, and a nose for a fine single malt.

Our thanks and sincere gratitude for the fabulous care from the staff at Sunrise of Oakville (with special thanks to Cheryl, Josephine and Sarah), and to the incredible personal loving care provided by Iris, Fiona, Subha, Gina, and Barbara. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Visitation will be held at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, Oakville on Saturday November 23, 2024 from 10 am - 11 am with funeral service following in the chapel at 11 am.
