Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Roy, age 72, on October 15, 2009. He leaves behind a legacy of dignity, integrity, intelligence and strength with which he has served as a gifted guide for his wife, children, family and friends. Michael (Mike) was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the oldest of five children. He grew up in Kenora, Ontario and attended Kenora Keewatin District High School where he distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete and student. He attended Queens University, obtained his C.A. designation and worked with Dunwoody and Co., and as the Superintendent of Business with the Boards of Education in Kenora, Grey County and Peel Region. He was noted in his career for his quick intelligence, confident leadership and the respectful dialogue he brought to all matters large and small. In doing so, he made a significant contribution to the field of education in Ontario. Mike met his first wife, Lois Rogiani, in high school in Kenora. His compliment in every way, Mike's quiet calmness was balanced by Lois' outgoing energy and together they sang and danced their 34 years together with great groups of friends in Kenora, Owen Sound and Oakville, Ontario. Their summers were spent at "camp" on Coney Island on Lake of the Woods, a place where they created very special family memories. Mike and Lois had three children, Catherine, Jane and Stephen Roy. Mike's role in his children's lives was significant: he led by example, never with comment or criticism. His faith in all of his kids was powerful, allowing them to flounder and flourish with an underlying confidence in their abilities to do well and to do right. This life lesson is one his children hope to pass on to their father's ten grandchildren, all of whom possess a deep respect and love for their "Grandpa Roy". In 1998, Mike met and married Dorothy Plante. He was blessed to have had the opportunity to spend the last eleven years of his life with his best friend, Dottie. Together they enjoyed an active social life of golf and tennis at their home in Naples, Florida and in the summer months, quiet leisurely days in Wiarton, Ontario. Dorothy's energy, initiative and intelligence invigorated both of their lives and their love and deep care for one another was a blessing to both of them. It is with profound sadness that Dorothy says goodbye to her life's partner. Michael will be deeply missed by many. He leaves behind his wife Dorothy, his children Catherine (Michael Bradley), Jane (Angus Tucker) and Stephen Roy (Heather Upton); his ten grandchildren Nicholas, Sean, Alexandra and Mathew Bradley, James, Mary Jane and Jack Tucker, and Luke, Sam, and Ella Roy; his brothers Paul (Phyllis), Philip (Glenda) and John (Darly) Roy and his sister-in-law Lori (Malcolm) Brown, his father-in-law, Peter Plante as well as his many nieces and nephew; he is predeceased by his first wife Lois Roy (Rogiani), his parents, Marcel and Nora Roy, his sister, Mary Theresa Roy and his in-laws, Edna and Emile Rogiani and Helen Plante. Our family would like to express our appreciation for the compassionate care Michael received from Dr. Newton, Dr. Johnson and their staff at the GBHS Owen Sound Hospital. A family service was held on Monday October 19, 2009 at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church in Oakville, Ontario. If you wish, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario: P.O. Box 7008, Station Main, London, Ontario N5Y 5W7 or the Ontario Lung Association, 573 King Street East, Toronto, Ontario, M5A 4L3.
