Mel completed his education at the Southshields Marine and Technical College in the UK, and obtained his Foreign-Going Master's Certificate. He commanded freighters, bulk carriers and passenger ships around the world. Mel's long sea career connected him with the plight of plastic destroying the ocean eco-system and he was keen to speak out and educate others on ways to manage this issue. His wife Elaine and his daughter Cheryl accompanied him on many routes around the world before they settled in Canada , eventually moving to Oakville, Ontario, where his son Ashley was born.
Mel was a true presence in any room with an incredible gift for speaking in front of hundreds of people, yet connecting with people one on one. We will always remember him for his generosity and kindness. Anyone who has visited his home has certainly experienced his hospitality and seen his beautiful garden where he spent many hours. Mel was a devoted Catholic, and heavily influenced by his uncle, Archbishop Angelo Fernandes (New Delhi). He was actively involved in his church, St. Mike's in Oakville, and loved playing squash and going for long walks.
Mel will be missed by so many: Elaine, Cheryl and her husband Jeffrey, Ashley and his wife Anuja, and his grandchildren Alex, Kate, Renee and Ben who were a great source of pride for him. He will also be missed by the Fernandes and Falcao families, and his many close friends.
