Obituary

“

Above all, Maurice was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

Maurice Archer was born on October 31, 1932, in Northfleet, Kent, England, and passed away on October 26, 2026, in Oakville, Ontario.

After completing grammar school, Maurice attended the London School of Economics, University of London, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science (Economics) degree. He then spent two years in Brazil, working in the field of economic development. His work took him first to Rio de Janeiro with Companhia Brasileira de Engenharia and later to Fortaleza with the Bank of the Northeast of Brazil.

Maurice continued his studies at Yale University in the United States, where he earned a Master's degree in International Economics in 1956. Following his studies, he returned to England to fulfill his compulsory military service. Much of this time was spent in West Africa on secondment to the Ghana Army in Tamale, Northern Ghana. Commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II, he completed his service in Maidstone, Kent, holding the rank of Lieutenant in the Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment.

In 1960, Maurice joined the Research Department of the Bank of London and South America, serving as an economist in both London, England, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

His integrity, dedication, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

In 1962, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada, joining several family members who had already settled there. During his first year in Toronto, he worked in property management and mortgage financing with A. LePage, and achieved the highest score in the national real estate exam. He also taught economics in the evening program at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, now Toronto Metropolitan University.

It was in Toronto that Maurice met and married Odette Krickler, a teacher. Together they built a loving family and raised three children: Richard, Robert, and Marie-Louise.

In 1963, Maurice joined Ryerson's Faculty of Business full-time and devoted the next twenty-five years to teaching and writing about Canadian business and economics. His landmark 700-page McGraw-Hill textbook, An Introduction to Canadian Business, sold more than 100,000 copies and became a widely used resource for students across Canada. He also authored and co-authored several college-level textbooks on Canadian economics, industrial relations, and business law.

Beyond the classroom, Professor Emeritus Archer served as Director of Ryerson's China Program, overseeing educational exchanges that brought Chinese academics and government officials to study at Ryerson. He also taught business courses in China at the Shanghai University of Technology and travelled extensively throughout the country.

Following his retirement from Ryerson in 1988, Maurice undertook several international consulting assignments on behalf of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). His work took him to Colombia, Ghana, Guatemala, Swaziland, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Maurice maintained a lifelong passion for international travel and world cultures. He and Odette travelled extensively together, combining their love of exploration with an appreciation for fine cuisine and the opportunity to experience new places and people.

Above all, Maurice was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He worked tirelessly throughout his life to provide for those he loved, took great pride in his responsibilities, and remained steadfast in his commitment to his family. His integrity, dedication, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Maurice was predeceased by his sons, Robert (1993) and Richard (2025). He is survived by his beloved wife, Odette; his loving daughter, Marie-Louise; his grandchildren, Julia and Jacob, and their father Cesar Gorinsky. He will also be remembered by his sister, Margaret Lee, along with many relatives and friends whose lives he touched.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, 47 Reynolds Street, Oakville, Ontario, on Wednesday, November 4, at 11:00 a.m.
