On November 8th, 2010, Maureen passed away peacefully at home following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on April 24, 1939, in Newcastle England, she arrived in Canada in January of 1970 with husband Malcolm. Originally trained as a nurse, she continued her service in the medical community by pursuing a degree in Social Work, and dedicated over 20 years leading up to her retirement to the profession at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She remained actively engaged in her community as a member of CFUW and Bronte Harbour Yacht Club. She travelled extensively from Alaska to China, to the Galapagos and the Amazon, and enjoyed a host of other interests ranging from birding and swimming to Tai-Chi. Maureen will be deeply missed and remembered for her compassion, energy, dedication, sense of humour and zest for life. She is predeceased by her father Jim Downey and her mother Nora Downey. Maureen is survived by her husband Malcolm, her sons Adrian and Phil (Kim) and granddaughter Taylor. Visitation will be held on Friday November 12th from 7pm to 9pm at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road, (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600),Oakville. Funeral services to be held at 11:00 am on Saturday November 13th. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society.
