Obituary

With heavy hearts we announce the death of our mother, Maureen Margaret Crowley (nee Graydon), on Sunday, October 17, 2021, in her 96 th year. Born in Winnipeg on November 18, 1925, Maureen was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Paul Bamford Crowley (September 30, 1925-October 18, 2010); and by her parents, Edward and Margaret Graydon, her stepmother Karin Graydon and brother Ed Graydon.

She is survived by her four children, Christine (Angus), Kathleen, Maureen (Bob) and Paul (Karla); 11 grandchildren, John Paul (Mari) & David (Nori); Richard, Susanna (Matt) & Alexandra; Jacquie (Paolo), Michael (Jennifer) & Paula (Max), and Lauren (Kevin), Graydon (Teja) & Erin (Aaron); and 17 great grandchildren, Loghan, Owen, Emmerson, Kai, Joshua, Holly, Penny, Wyatt, Ella, Jack, William, Hazel, Thomas, Benjamin, Katie, Brie and Lucy; and four step grandchildren, David, Daniel (Sam), Katherina and Alessia.

Mom attended Saint Mary's Academy in Winnipeg and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1948, with a degree in Social Work. She and Dad headed East in 1949, living in Toronto, Montreal and Burlington before retiring to Ennisclare on the Lake in Oakville. In addition to social work, Mom taught Kindergarten and was office manager for the Canadian Cancer Society in Burlington. Although transplants to the East, Mom and Dad remained faithful to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers! In 1960 they became avid "cottagers" in Haliburton, where the family retreat is still enjoyed today.

Mom loved to sing and was in choirs from her school days and into her 90s, in choral societies at school, church choirs at St. Raphael's in Burlington and St. Dominic's in Oakville and most recently as an alto with the Ennisclare Singers for over 30 years. At home she was famous for breaking into song with Dad about any little thing.

Mom also loved to read, knit and play bridge. And she passed those loves on. When we were kids she would let us stay in bed to read on rainy cottage mornings. Now our kids do the same. She taught her kids to play bridge and grandkids how to knit (it skipped a generation!). She made (and was loved for) Sunday pies, yummy lemon squares, biscuits and Christmas goodies, and was guaranteed to have treats in her freezer. She always had time for a cup of tea.

With the growing number of grandchildren, Mom became known as Nana. And she loved nothing more than to have her family around her. It was mutual. Nana was so positive about everything and could put a good spin on the worst of situations. Grandchildren regularly reached out to her for a "Nana" fix.

Abiding friendships were also important to Mom. She leaves her dear friend of 75 years, Peggy Rodway, who she met on her first day of university; her bridge group of 55 years, Betty Doherty, Pat Elliott, Rita Corrigan and Joan Henderson; and her Ennisclare friends Liz and Jim Fahey.

In her last year, Mom lived at Amica in Bronte where she was well looked after by caring staff and companions who we thank for their devotion. She never stopped missing Dad. Although we miss her, we are happy to think that they are reunited and in peace.

A private funeral mass at St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church in Oakville will be held.

Mom and Dad were long-time volunteers at the Good Shepherd in Hamilton. In lieu of flowers, should you wish to, a donation to the Good Shepherd would be appreciated.
