Obituary

Marta DeVito (Paccione)

On August 2, just shy of her 102nd birthday, Marta DeVito passed away.  She joins both her late husband of 60 years, Joseph DeVito (2007) as well as her daughter Angela (2013) in heaven.

Marta is a survived by her daughters Domenica (Doug), Tonia (Hugh), and son Rocco (Anna) and her younger sister, Ninetta Ciaccia, as well as 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  She was a special Nonna to Kristi (Joe), Jenny, John (Jane), Douglas (Ariah), Cynthia (Rick), Darryl (Brandy), Alana (Daniel), Bianca (Tyler), Victoria, Olivia and Natalie.  She also enjoyed the love of her great grandchildren Dean, Charles, Julian, Max, Mav, Coco, Waverly, Evelyn, Abbey, James, Julia, Atlas, Dylan and Sloane.

Born in Torrito, Bari, Italy on August 16, 1923, Marta emigrated to Canada in 1955 and relocated to Toronto. Finding their forever home, in Oakville, in 1957, was where she raised a family and was a stellar employee at LA Jones for many years.

Marta enjoyed her Italian traditions and shared those rituals with her family and friends at many celebrations.  Particularly, the annual Quasano, the Italian Festival where she spent time with her family and friends.  Christmas Eve was a highlight, in full Italian pomp as dozens of family members squeezed into the bungalow on Kingswood Dr.  One long extended table, always being added to, set the stage for the multi-course, boisterous and bountiful dinner. The evening was complete with Christmas songs that were also sung in Italian, the birth of baby Jesus, and passing out of gifts for all of the grandchildren.

She especially enjoyed winter months in Florida, basking on the beach with Joe walking the beach and fishing. In summer months, she enjoyed gardening and had all their summer meals outdoors.  They spent weeks in the Kawarthas with Domenica and Doug, in Southampton with Angela and Bill, and in Port Elgin with Tonia and Hugh.  She enjoyed visiting Rocco and Anna with his impressive fruit and vegetable garden.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Burloak Long-term care Nursing home (Extendicare Burloak) for their eighteen wonderful years of loving and mindful care they showed to Marta, their loving "mamma" as they would call her.
