With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our loving mother, Baba, and Pra Baba, Marta Hlatky. Marta was born in a small village in Slovakia and immigrated to Hamilton with her husband and daughter via a refugee camp in Germany following communist persecution. She devoted her life to her husband and daughter, her grandchildren, and later her great-grandchildren. She was the quintessential loving and gentle mother to all her family. Her beloved husband of 59 years, John Hlatky, predeceased her in 2002.
She is survived by her daughter Martha (John Schuman), her grandchildren, Alana Katharine Jackson (Paul Tomas), Christopher Anthony Jackson (Cheryl Lee), and Sean Thomas Jackson (Barbara Sexsmith) and their children, Elise and Ian Jackson. As a young girl, she was known by her community in Slovakia and her family members, as the "lawyer for the poor" and was always a champion of the underdog. She was a master seamstress and tailor, sewing all her own clothing, coats, and suits for her family. Her friends and family often fell prey to her wicked sense of humour, especially on April Fool's Day. She will be greatly missed.
Our gratitude is extended for the kindness and sensitivity of staff at the Williamsburg Retirement Centre and Northridge Long Term Care Home.
Visitation is at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville, on Saturday October 5 from 9:00 to 9:45 am, followed by Mass at St. Andrews Catholic Church, 47 Reynolds Street, Oakville at 10:00 am and then Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Burlington.
