IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maria De
Vita (Née Frattaruolo)
October 3, 1918 – August 5, 2025
With hearts full of love and gratitude, the family of Maria De Vita (née Frattaruolo) announces her peaceful passing in her 107th year. Maria passed away surrounded by family, love, and prayer — a reflection of the way she lived every one of her extraordinary 106 years.
Born on October 3rd, 1918, in the beautiful town of Monte Sant'Angelo in Foggia, Italy, Maria was the eldest of five beloved daughters, raised by her doting father Luigi and her gentle mother Felice, Maria's early life was steeped in faith, tradition, and a fierce love of family. She learned responsibility young, helping care for her sisters, and carried that deep sense of devotion and care into everything she did.
In 1939, she married the love of her life, Michele De Vita, in nearby Mattinata. Together they built a life rooted in resilience and unwavering love. They welcomed three children — Michelina, Peter, and Felice — and in 1950, with courage and hope in their hearts, they boarded a ship to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They didn't speak a word of English, but Maria was never one to be discouraged by challenge.
In her new home, Maria became a skilled seamstress, a role that suited her perfectly — not only did she stitch fabric, but she also wove the threads of her family's future. Her hands were never idle, her work ethic unmatched, and her heart always open.
Maria lived independently until the age of 102, a remarkable feat that speaks volumes about her strength, determination, and zest for life. In the final five years of her life, she was lovingly cared for by her devoted eldest daughter Michelina, with whom she shared a home in Oakville, surrounded by warmth, food, love, and family.
She is survived by her children Michelina Delija (and late husband Walter), Peter De Vita, and Felice Balenzano (with husband Joe). Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren: Paul (Susan) Delija, Christine (Patrick) Fletch, Laura (Michael) Flynn, Marianne (George) Sauriol, Michael Balenzano, John (Natasha) Balenzano, and Paul (Tuesday) Balenzano.
She was also blessed to see the joy of another generation in her great-grandchildren: Meghan and Amanda Flynn, Oliver and Miles Delija, and baby Sunny Balenzano — each a light in her long, beautiful life.
Maria was the matriarch of a family that spans continents and generations — a woman of quiet strength, enduring faith, and limitless love. She taught us the power of sacrifice, the value of family dinners, the comfort of a homemade meal, and the importance of loving with your whole heart. Her stories, songs, and spirit will echo in our hearts forever.
Rest peacefully, Nonna. We will love you always.
