Obituary

Margot Christa Erhardt

April 18, 1932 – December 19, 2021

On Sunday December 19, 2021, Margot passed away peacefully under palliative care at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital at the age of 89.

Born April 18, 1932 in the village of Gammau, Germany, Margot was the youngest of six children.  Post-war, the family's home town fell under Soviet control.  Margot's father and eldest brother remained to protect the family business.  Margot's mother took her and four siblings and fled westward to Nürnberg which was under the Allies' control. Ultimately they settled in the rural town of Neutstadt.  Margot never saw her father again.

With so few job opportunities in Germany, as a young single woman Margot worked in a hospital in Switzerland.  During that time friends spoke of going to America.  The idea of traveling abroad appealed to her.  Margot chose to immigrate to Canada where she secured work as a domestic for a family in Winnipeg Manitoba.  A continuing sense of adventure brought Margot to Toronto Ontario where she met and married her husband of 56 years, Alois.  It's been almost nine years since dad passed.  Mom missed him.

Margot was a gentle, kind-hearted, generous and loving soul. She was fully devoted to keeping a warm and welcoming home and raising two sons. Mom and dad began with nothing.  They worked hard and lived frugally. Summer camping vacations were always a highlight.  Mom loved her backyard and gardening.  In later years she would head start the growing season by planting seed trays indoors and in the autumn she would carefully collect seeds from those beautiful flowers that she nurtured from seed.  Television was of no interest.  Backyard birds, rabbits and butterflies provided her entertainment.  Mom was an exceptional cook.  Savoury, authentic German dishes like sauerbraten and roulladen served with spätzle were among the family favourites.

Later in life mom joyfully embraced daughters-in-law and gleefully the generation of grandchildren that followed.   In her remaining years she welcomed the arrival of great grandchildren, loving them as dearly as though her own.  Oh how she looked forward to family visits.

Mom is greatly missed by her sons Manfred and Andrew, and her grandchildren Madison (Liam), Taline, Jordan, Chelsea (Bryan), Hannah (Andrew), Carragh, and Gwyneth. Great grandchildren Logan and Brooklyn will miss her too when they learn what a terrific lady mom was.

Visitation will be held at the Kopriva-Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600), Oakville from 7-9pm Tuesday December 28, 2021.
