Obituary

On April 14, 2023 Margaret Anne Stanley (nee Harvey) beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully in Oakville just shy of her 88 th birthday. Loving wife of James Evans Stanley (deceased March 21, 2000) for 43 years. Mom and Dad had a loving and harmonious relationship which provided a warm, close-knit home for our family of five. Mom will be forever missed by Nancy Beddoe (Tim), Kim Lanthier (John) and Scott Stanley (Lisa). Mom cherished her grandchildren. Her face lit up whenever she saw them. Nana will be missed by Calla Stanley, Liam Stanley, Danielle Lanthier, Rebecca Wang (nee Lanthier) (Eric) and David Beddoe. Mom was an only child and was predeceased by her mother Helen Harvey (nee Wilton) and father Cecil Harvey.

Marg was born in Strathroy, Ontario on April 26, 1935.  She spent her younger childhood years in Texas and Oklahoma, before her family moved to London, Ontario.  Marg graduated from University of Toronto, School of Dental Nursing.

Marg and Jim married August 17, 1957, and settled in their first home in Windsor, Ontario.  Marg worked as a dental nurse for 5 years, putting her career on hold to care for her children.  In 1966, Marg and Jim moved to Oakville where they raised their growing family, and Marg would live in their home on Trafford Crescent for over 40 years.

Marg was always very social, and her friendships were very important to her.  The backyard pool was a favourite spot for family and neighbouring friends.  Marg and Jim often hosted the neighbourhood fireworks parties, and their annual New Years Eve bash was wildly anticipated.  Marg's mischievous fun streak made these events a blast for all.

Marg loved to talk with others and had an infectious sense of humour, but you needn't be a friend or relative to enjoy this side of her.  With ease, she could strike up a conversation full of laughter with just about anyone she met.

Traditions were important to Marg, whether bringing the family to St. Paul's United Church every Sunday, observing annual celebrations, long car trips each summer with the kids (over the years, they visited every state in the continental US and had been coast to coast across Canada), or the week's cottage rental on Harp Lake in Huntsville.

When the children were older, Marg returned to paid employment, as the Secretary at Church of the Epiphany.  But besides her work and ongoing responsibilities in the home, Marg was forever generous with her time.  She served with the UCW at St. Paul's, and volunteered at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital for 25 years, initially installing Life Line devices, and later in the Breast Feeding Clinic. After Jim's passing, Marg continued to travel and cruise accompanied by good friends and family.

Marg was a strong-minded and independent woman.  She spoke up for herself (and sometimes for Jim too), and was not one to be intimidated by the judgement of others.  In her final years, despite struggles with her health, she continued to make her own decisions with tenacity.  Marg loved her condo in Bronte Harbour, and enjoyed her beautiful views of Lake Ontario until the end of her life.

The family thank the staff at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their care of Marg during her final days. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oakville Hospital Foundation. Friends and family will be received at Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd West, Oakville, on Monday April 24th 2:00 - 4:00 PM and 6:00 - 8:00 PM. A celebration of Marg's life will be held in the Kopriva Taylor Chapel on Tuesday April 25th at 11:00 am, reception to follow immediately.
