Obituary

Died in her 89th year on Saturday, November 28th at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, Ontario. The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Robert Gabriel of Oakville, for his many years of medical assistance to our mother as well as to the intensive care unit at the Trillium Health Centre for their professionalism and guidance. Special thanks to the staff of the Mississauga/Halton CCAC for their expert assistance during the last years. In addition we wish to extend our sincere appreciation to the staff and management of the Mississauga Golf and Country Club who for more than fifty years provided a second home for our family and were so supportive and caring during her last moments. She was the loving and devoted wife of George Henry Blumenauer, proud mother of George Richard (Mary), William Gordon (Laura) and Christian Martin (Laetitia). Her grandchildren Raymond, Lindsey, James, Christian, Alexandra and Kathleen were her treasures who take with them the love and support of a wonderful woman. Margaret was predeceased by her parents, Ethel Nielsen, Christian Martin Nielsen and her twin brother, Christian Marius Nielsen. She is survived by her cousins Elisabeth Nielsen Wiig, of Texas and Christine Heisey of Maryland. Born in New York City, Margaret Nielsen inherited a strong streak of independence from her mother, a superb intensive care nurse, who also had an outrageous character which she used to entertain her grandchildren with much delight. From her father, the Great Dane, she received an unending strength of character and a steely determination to succeed both as a wife and as a mother. In 1947, she married a young engineer with the Otis Elevator Company of Canada and she and her Long Island accent moved north first to Hamilton, then Port Credit and for the last fifty years she made her home in Oakville. She entertained the world at her home in a constant series of dinners and receptions that were planned with military precision. While her husband had to deal with the demands of a successful business career, she assumed the responsibility of raising three strongly independent sons in whom she instilled a love of life and a sense of duty. At the end of her life she gave thanks for her health, happiness and good fortune to have lived so long amidst her family and friends. She will be missed not only by her family but by a large circle of devoted friends who through the years provided a source of joy and pride to her. Visitations will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600), Oakville from 2-4 & 7-9pm Wednesday with a Service of Remembrance on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Kopriva Taylor Chapel. There will be a private family interment. In lieu of flowers, please donate generously to your favourite charity.
