Obituary

Lionel passed peacefully at home with his beloved wife (Janet) of 70 years at his side. Loved father of Richard (Dawn), Charles (Karen) and John (Kathy). Dear grandfather of Jamie (Jennifer), Michael (Judy), Joanne (Jon), Jessie (Stephen), Elizabeth, Kristen, Brandon and Lauren. Beloved great-grandfather to Chloe, Tyler and Julia. Born in Barbados, Lionel was a student at Imperial College in Trinidad and studied to become a Sugar Technologist. He joined the RAF in 1943 and trained to become a pilot in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan. This took him to Saskatchewan. There he met Janet and they were married about three months later in Vancouver. While in the Air Force he was nicknamed Barry for his resemblance to actor Lionel Barrymore. After the war, they returned to Barbados for a couple of years before emigrating to Canada where Lionel took a job with Ford Motor Company in Calgary. Ford was like a second family to him. He retired in 1978 after a 30 year career with them during which he and Janet moved to Toronto then to Oakville in 1960, where they've resided ever since. There is a park bench in Gairloch Gardens dedicated to their long residency in a town they loved. Post retirement, Lionel was active in volunteering for the United Way, Meals on Wheels, and in driving cancer patients to their appointments. A kinder, more thoughtful, generous, humble and devoted man, you may never find. He was the head of a large extended family, and took that job on with enthusiasm. He was a husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, great uncle, great great uncle and he did them all with such grace and understanding. Always interested in each of us, and always there to listen. As children, our elders are larger than life. As we grow we realize that some are still larger than life. We will miss you always. The family has held a private celebration of his life at home. Those who wish may make a memorial contribution to the charity of their choice.
