Karl Ruder was born on June 14, 1934, in Herne, Germany. Having survived the hardships of war, he went on to study prosthetics in Leuschner, Herne, where he laid the foundation for a life defined by skill, dedication, and compassion. After graduating, Karl embraced his love of travel, spending time in Holland, France, Spain, Denmark, and Italy. It was also in Herne during his youth that he met Christa, the love of his life.
In 1956, Karl set out for Canada by boat, beginning a new chapter filled with opportunity and hope. Christa joined him in 1959, and they were immediately married in Toronto, starting a lifelong partnership rooted in love, adventure, and mutual support.
Karl enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a dual-certified prosthetist and orthotist, helping countless individuals regain mobility and independence. He was also proud to share his knowledge as a founding instructor at George Brown College of Prosthetics and Orthotics, mentoring future generations in his profession.
Outside of his work, Karl had a deep love for life's simple and joyful pleasures. He was passionate about tennis, cross-country skiing, cards, games, woodworking and camping, interests he shared with his wife and children. He also delighted in good food and drink, music, laughter, and above all, time spent with family. Karl will be remembered for his warmth, curiosity, generosity, and zest for life, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
