Obituary

Julian Michael Richard Ryder

November 12, 1939 – February 20, 2025

Julian passed away peacefully on Thursday February 20 in Oakville. He was predeceased by his cherished wife, Margaret. He will be dearly missed by his children, Fiona (Frank), Justin (Lindsey), and stepsons Jason (Jennifer), Craig (Amanda), grandchildren, Thomas, Courtney, Jeremy, Molly, Campbell, and Henry, and great grandchild, Oakley. He will also be missed by his family in England and friends nearby.

Julian emigrated to Canada in 1967. He was a talented Architect and creative artist. His favourite hobby was engaging in his own home renovation that sometimes extended to additions and extensions – all done by himself (and whatever family could be recruited at that time.)

After working with major Toronto firms through the 60's and 70's, Julian opened his own practice in Oakville in 1982. He had been a 30 year member of the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (Heritage Oakville Committee) and was deeply connected to maintaining the heritage roots of the town. He was recognized by Ontario Heritage Trust for his work in Built Heritage.

Julian's designs can be seen throughout Oakville (and beyond). He designed municipal halls, community centres, and office buildings both in Oakville and a number of communities across the province. Notable projects include: the Oakville Downtown Parking Garage that fit seamlessly into the town streetscape and earned local and international awards, the rebuild of the Oakville House Tavern and TOWARF headquarters (Town of Oakville Water Air Rescue Force). He was particularly adept at creating additions and new builds that meshed with the heritage integrity of existing buildings and the community – included, but not limited to - Murray House, Kerosene Castle (MacLaughlin College) and many private residences.

There is nothing Julian enjoyed more than a gathering of friends and family. He curated many amazing dinners at "Chisholm". His quiet and distinctive dry sense of humour will be missed by all.

A celebration of life will be held later in the spring.
