After a brief illness, it is with disbelief and sorrow that we announce the death of our father Joseph (Joe) Francis Earls at the age of 71.
Joe is survived by his daughters Aoife (Brad), Niamh (Trevor), Clodagh (Nick), and his beloved grandchildren Nolan, Torin, Feodora and Fionnuala. He will be greatly missed by his sisters, Thérèse and Áine, his brother, John, and sister and brothers in law, Ursula, Brendan, Niall, Tony, and Richard. He was also a devoted uncle to numerous nieces and nephews across the globe. Joe was predeceased by his parents Frank and Nancy Earls, his sister Mary and his wife Finola in 2010, the mother of his children and love of his life for over 36 years.
Joe, a mechanical engineer, and Finola came to Canada in 1975 from Limerick, Ireland to seek adventure through work and travel. They made their first home in Alberta, and then in Ontario. After a short move back to Ireland they returned, making Oakville Ontario their home to raise their girls. Joe had a celebrated career as an engineer and project management professional, leading manufacturing for prolific companies like Milton Bradley and Hershey's Canada but left his career to care for Finola in her final year. A believer in life-long-learning, he then found his next calling in real estate. Joe was a force in business and was always striving for the next challenging experience to stay active and engaged in both body and mind.
He was a devout Catholic, Munster Rugby fan, world traveller, opera enthusiast, and Irishman; all of these passions he owned with pride.
Joe was a wonderful father, ferocious and kind, and a devoted husband, but his greatest joy came as a doting Granda/Winda to his four little best friends. We are so grateful for time that he had with his grandchildren as he truly enriched their lives.
In his final battle, we are grateful for the care he received from the many nurses and doctors at Niagara Health - St Catharines who worked tirelessly to help make his final days comfortable and humane, especially Dr. Malhotra, Hugh Cameron RPN, Nelly Mae RN, and the CCRT team.
In Joe's honour please consider a donation to the Canada Liver Foundation or the Niagara Health Foundation.
