It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Jose Augusto Pereira on May 4th, 2021 at the age of 85. Predeceased by his brothers Eluteiro and Antonio, his sister, Mecia, and his parents, Jose Severino Pereira and Felicidade Augusta Avila. Born in Ribeira Seca, Sao Jorge, Azores on July 1, 1935, he was destined to celebrate the majority of his birthdays with his adopted homeland. The oldest of nine children, he remained close to all of his siblings, even after he left for Canada in 1965, where he would make Oakville his home and where he would meet the love of this life, Gilda. One of ten children herself, Jose would become an honorary brother to Gilda's siblings and their families and a cherished adopted son to her mother, Maria Jose (Mimi), who would live with them until her passing. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 51 years, his daughter Grace (Mike Wild), and his extensive family members in Oakville, California and Portugal. He was a beloved member of the Portuguese-Canadian community in Oakville where he co-ran Azores Supermarket on Kerr Street with his cousin Herman Fontes for many years. Before his retirement, he was a favourite delivery person/heartthrob at the retirement home across the street. Jose was passionate about music, having played tuba with the Filarmonica Uniao Popular Ribeira Seca;  sports, including his beloved Benfica fc and Maple Leafs; and travel, especially back to his hometown in Sao Jorge, where part of his heart never left. He will be fondly remembered as a favourite uncle, godfather and surrogate grandfather (Filipa and Joao). He loved all children, and never saw a head of hair that he did not want to tousle, or an underarm he did not want to tickle. Mostly, he will be remembered for his peaceful, serene manner, his humble nature, and being the ultimate girl dad. Against the odds, he fought very hard to stay with the family that loved him so much, but god had other plans for our angel on earth. Always in our hearts, he will be deeply missed by all who had the honour of knowing him.
