Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Michael Skakie, who peacefully left us on April 8, 2025, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, at the age of 72, following a courageous journey with cancer.

Born in Lindsay, Victoria County, Ontario, to Frank Skakie and Michalena (Lena) Ratushniak, John grew up alongside his beloved sisters Carol, Linda, Marg, and Joan. From an early age, he was known for his warmth, intelligence, and a spirited sense of humour that only grew stronger with time.

John had a long and successful career in Human Resources, where his process-driven mindset and thoughtful approach to people left a lasting impression. These qualities carried him through life—and became all the more evident following his cancer diagnosis in early 2019. With remarkable grace, strength, and logic, John approached every step of his journey with dignity and determination, ultimately navigating the path on his own terms. As a proud and loving father and grandfather, John was eternally optimistic to protect and uplift those around him.

A beautiful soul, John loved deeply and lived fully. He had impeccable taste and a flair for fashion that was uniquely his. A devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan, he found great joy in the game of hockey—especially in watching his son Adrian play throughout the years. He loved to travel, collecting stories across North America, Europe, and South America—each adventure becoming part of the rich tapestry of his life.

To know John was to laugh. His endless supply of dad jokes, his magnetic personality, and his natural ability to connect with people made him unforgettable. In his later years, John became a Niagara Falls Tour Guide, in which he had the incredible opportunity to meet people around the world and showcase the history of the beautiful city he lived in.

John leaves behind his cherished partner Diane; former spouse Lisa, his children Adrian (Nicole) and Alexandra (Jeff); and his adored grandchildren, Remi (James). He is predeceased by his parents (Frank, Michalena, and Yolande) and sister (Linda), and will be missed beyond words by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Sultan Rashid Chaudhry for his exceptional care and compassion. Dr. Chaudhry remarked on John's deep understanding of his own health and the clarity with which he communicated—traits that reflected John's commitment to his life and loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, the Skakie family has asked that donations be made to Jumpstart in memory of John. Jumpstart helps kids overcome financial and accessibility barriers to sport and recreation to provide inclusive play across Canada.
