Obituary

At Oakville Trafalgar Hospital on Tuesday, August 12 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by family. Loving husband of Ruth for 57 years, beloved father of Doug (Mary), Liz Blake (Peter) and Sheri Cummings (Wayne), caring grandfather of Johnathan, Sarah, Luke, Joseph, Eric, Michael, David and Tom. Survived by brother Orv (Muriel), sister-in-law Barb and predeceased by brother Dave. Born April 2, 1928 in St. Mary's, John was a true lover of life whose variety of experience reflected his many passions. He earned a degree from the University of Western Ontario funded in part by his talent for the saxophone and clarinet as he played in several big bands. The first half of his work career was spent in the aluminum and plastics industry where he oversaw the introduction of plastic pipe into the plumbing industry. He was active with the Society of the Plastics Industry of Canada, serving as its President for two years, as well as being the first representative from that industry appointed to Canadian Standards Association committees. In 1972 John moved in a new direction, spending the second half of his career in the lumber industry, including several years operating his own lumberyard. A proud Rotarian, John received the Paul Harris award twice, most recently for his assistance on the Water for Humanity initiative. He constantly volunteered for community projects including church committees, condominium associations and the Pickering Nuclear Committee Advisory Council. He had a lifelong interest in the stock market, no doubt fueled by his naturally optimistic character. His eclectic choice of headgear and mischievous sense of humour will be missed. A memorial service will be held at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. West, Oakville, (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600) on Saturday August 16th at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
