Obituary

John Hammond Krug passed away peacefully on February 24, 2026, at the age of 91, just eight weeks after the passing of his beloved wife, Shirley.

Born in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1934, John built a long and successful career in the communications sector, dedicating his professional life primarily to television. He spent many years in management at CFCF in Montreal before relocating to Oakville in 1982 to join CHUM Media. He concluded his remarkable career by opening and successfully leading CHRO-TV (NewRO) in Ottawa, a professional achievement of which he was especially proud.

John was the son of the late Kay and Charles Krug, and the grandson of Canadian painter John Hammond, renowned for his landscapes and marine scenes of the Bay of Fundy. He was the devoted soulmate of Shirley Krug (née Cook) for 62 wonderful years. John was rarely far from Shirley’s side, happily accompanying her on her many “plans.” We are certain that one of her plans was for them to be together forever — and, true to form, John followed her instructions.

He was a proud and loving father to David (Kelly) and Peter (Irene), and a cherished “Poppa” to Nolan and Samantha. He was a dear brother to Barbara and to the late Karla Rattenbury.

After retiring from a long and successful career in media, John remained an avid follower of the news, a deep thinker, and a social storyteller who loved conversation, connection, and time spent with family and friends. He was never happier than during summer days in Prince Edward Island—breathing in the island air, enjoying a good round of golf, and ending the day with a lobster supper surrounded by loved ones.

John was the true definition of a gentleman. He brought warmth, laughter, and a thoughtful presence to every room he entered, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of life and burial will take place in late spring at Belle River Cemetery in Prince Edward Island.
