IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John
Eliopoulos
August 15, 1932 – July 4, 2023
On July 4, 2023, John Eliopoulos, 90, passed away peacefully with his wife Pat, and children by his side. John and Pat married in 1971 and made their life in Belleville, Ontario. Together they had three children Peter (married to Cathy), Demetre (married to Caitriona) and Lee (married to Nikitas). John had six grandchildren that he adored: Michael, Maddie, Stephanie, John, Arianna and Alexandro. This close-knit family was central to John's life and he loved them deeply.
John, the second-youngest of six children, was born on August 15, 1932 in Amykles, Sparta. At the time of his passing, John was predeceased by his parents, brothers and sisters. In 1952, John was among the wave of Greek immigrants who landed in Halifax's Pier 21.In Toronto, John founded and served as the inaugural council president of the Amykles Society, which provided an essential connection for fellow immigrants and supported their home village by funding the construction of a church and library. After spending several years in Toronto, he moved to Belleville where he and Pat owned the Belmont Restaurant for 30 years. The restaurant was a central fixture in the downtown community and it seemed like most of Belleville knew John. John also remained close to the Greek community in Belleville, serving as president of the Greek Orthodox Church council. In 2018, John and Pat moved to Oakville to be close to their children and grandchildren.
John was a loving husband and devoted to his children and grandchildren. His family meant everything to him. John's wife, children and grandchildren have a lifetime of wonderful memories to fill their hearts.
There will be a private funeral held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Canadian Alzheimer Society of Canada.
