Obituary

It is with great sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend, Jock Dunbar, who died peacefully in his sleep this past Monday morning at North Ridge Long Term Care Home, where he spent the final three years of his life. When Jock entered into long-term care eight years ago he told me and Gary Vandenboom that he wanted to see his 90th birthday. I'm pleased to share that he reached his goal, though when he turned 90 last August he was convinced he was turning 108. Despite our best efforts, we couldn't convince him otherwise. To keep his spirits high we brought him a cake that read, "Happy 108th Birthday!""See?" he puffed at us smugly upon seeing the cake, pleased to have been proven right. "I told you I was turning 108."Jock was involved in Oakville hockey for 60 years in many capacities. As one of the original founders of MOHA he filled many roles over the years: coach, convenor, manager, president, and mentor to many. His cantankerous Scottish sense of humour was known to many as his best quality, second only to his generous heart. Jock was devoted to the success of young hockey players in this town, covering everything from registration fees to new equipment for many promising players over the years who otherwise could not afford to play the sport.
A loyal antique hunter, he would often spend his summer months hunting through garage sales to buy valuable items, only to sell them and use the money made to buy hockey equipment for young kids. Nothing made Jock happier than providing opportunities for kids to play the game.
Jock provided me with many laughs and lessons over the 50 years that I knew him, but the one that will stick with me always was his consistent and persistent desire to pay it forward. The inspiration to pay it forward stuck with me especially as Gary and I watched him move from long-term care home to long-term care home over the last eight years. I am proud and honoured that I was given the chance to be a friend to Jock until his last day.  Losing him has impacted me tremendously, and I know it will impact many others. Jock touched a lot of people. If you were one of them, I would encourage you to call a friend who also knew Jock, share some stories and have some laughs in his name. Most importantly, don't let his legacy die. Jock took care of so many people, and in his memory we should strive to take care of each other. A celebration of life will be held at Monaghan's Sports Pub, 1289 Marlborough Court, Oakville on Sunday February 9, 2020 from 3-5 pm. Bring your favourite Jock memories and photos to share.
