Johanna ('Corry') Cornelia Riemann
March 12, 1935 – August 12, 2022
It's with sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful and devoted Mother, Johanna Cornelia Riemann, who passed away peacefully surrounded by family members and loving caregivers on Friday, August 12, 2022, in her 88th year after a courageous battle with cancer. Survived by her daughter Joanne Miatello (husband Mark) and her son Martin Karens (wife Kristi), her sisters Wilhelmina Dumas (Toronto), Gerrie van der Plas (Netherlands) and Dini Nieuwland (Netherlands). Beloved sister of the late Janny Hazenkamp, predeceased. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren Eric, Kevin, Jack, Glen, Matthew.
Corry as she was known - was born in Hengelo the Netherlands just before the Second World War. She lived through the War with perseverance. At the young age of 18 she immigrated to Canada aboard the SS Waterman and arrived in Halifax on July 24, 1953. She immediately fell in love with Canada and headed west to Ontario where she was befriended by the Taylor family who took her under their wing and brought her to their cottage in Combermere, Ontario on weekends. It was there that she fell in love with Ontario's cottage country. Corry married Martin Karens Sr. (Deceased April 3, 2011) and began to raise a family in Toronto.
Corry led a life of resilience. Eventually raising Martin and Joanne as a single mother by working as a waitress until she retired at the age of 65. Despite the long hours and hard work she absolutely loved working in the restaurant business and was a natural people person.
Her love of the north led her to her beloved Manitouwabing Lake where she camped for many years before building a cottage side by side to lifelong friends and Toronto neighbours Helmut & Ruth Guse. Once retired she spent every summer at the Cottage finding peace and joy there while spending time with family and friends.
You could find her in her garden or sitting on the deck reading her newspaper. She never missed picking up her Saturday Star - checking flyers for weekly deals, setting aside the TV Guide and cutting out interesting articles for her children and grandchildren.
For the last 7+ years of her life she lived with her son Martin, wife Kristi and grandsons Jack and Matt in Oakville, Ontario.
