Obituary

Peacefully, in his 90th year, after a short illness. Beloved husband of over 63 years to wife Eileen (nee Wilson). Dear father to Brian (Lynda), Kathy Best (Colin) and Carolyn Tyrie (Paul). Predeceased by brothers John and Wylie and sisters Alice and Margaret. Kind grandfather to Christina, Katie, Rebecca, Megan, Dana, Brian and Diana. Fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews in Canada, the UK and Australia. Jim grew up on the family farm in Parkgate, Northern Ireland that dates from the 17th century. He worked in Belfast as a young man and became a manager at the Linen Bleachworks. In 1957 he and Eileen immigrated to Canada and lived in Brantford and Pickering before settling in Oakville in 1969. In the early years to support his growing family Jim would work literally around the clock in jobs as diverse as milk truck driver, prison guard, farm worker and cleaner. He somehow found time to attend night school at Ryerson and obtained his Business Management Certification. After several years as a manager at the Gordon A. McEachern Company, Jim was appointed Superintendent of Plant and Operations at the Peel District School Board. He managed the Board's explosive growth though the 70's and 80's and is fondly remembered as a skilled manager who had an incredible ability to know and engage each of his staff in over 120 schools. In retirement Jim and Eileen spent busy days running their antiques business, selling their wares throughout southern Ontario. Jim also spent many evenings as a volunteer helping recent immigrants learn to speak English. Jim was slowed in his later years by illness but retained his gentle manor and sense of humour to the very end. He will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends. Jim's family would especially like to thank the staff at Post Inn Village and Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital for their care. Visitations are from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, October 26 at the Kopriva Taylor Funeral home in Oakville www.koprivataylor.com . The funeral will be held at 11 am Thursday, October 27 at the Walton Memorial United Church at 2489 Lakeshore Rd. W. in Oakville.
