Obituary

Peacefully at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, with his son/caregiver Edward and failthful friend Rose Sekulich by his side. Born in Kukuljanovo, Hrvatsko Primorje, Croatia, he immigrated to Canada in 1929 living in the Kirkland Lake, Schumacher and South Porcupine communities for most of his life. He was born into Eternal Life on December 28, 2013 in his ninety fourth year. Predeceased by his devoted wife Anne in 2007, he is the loving father of John (Jean) of Porcupine, Ontario,
and Richard (Mary) of Mississauga, and the cherished "Grandpa" of John Mavrinac (Pam), Alison Warne (Devon), Alanna Mavrinac, Maia Peros (Gordon), Ricky Mavrinac (Stasa), Julie Mavrinac (Dale) and Michael Mavrinac and beloved "Nono" of great-grandsons John and Alexander, great-grandfather of Kaleigh, Luca, Bryson and John and loved pappou of Constantinos and Alexandros. Ivan will be sadly missed by his sisters in law Laurie Krznaric and Sandra Tomney (Porcupine). He is also survived by his
brother Joseph, his cousin Lina and numerous nephews and nieces as well as greatnephews and great-nieces. He had a special relationship with Dr. Theo Panteli and
Velimir Bracko whom he considered sons. Ivan also leaves his beloved aunt Filumena Peric and numerous cousins in the Peric, Cuculic and Stiglic families of Croatia. Following his elementary and secondary school education in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Ivan first managed branches for the firm Gamble Robinson Limited doing internal audits. For twenty years he was the Senior partner (with the late John Bagordo) of Schumacher Hardware and Furniture. He was then employed as the Deputy Administrator and Deputy
Treasurer at the Township of Tisdale and upon amalgamation was employed in the Treasury Department at the City of Timmins. Ivan was a fifty year member of the Royal Canadian Legion (having served in the Second
World War in Petawawa) a 60 year member of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America, and was the president of numerous organizations including the Schumacher Lion's Club and the Timmins Music Festival. He was a charter member of the Board of Governors of
Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology as well as the Timmins Chamber of Commerce. He was trustee for Lodge 930 of the Croatian Fraternal union of America and
with his late wife Anne instructed the Golden Strings Croatian Tamburica Orchestra in Schumacher. Ivan was the chairman of various fundraising committees (bingo and banquets) for St. Joachim's Roman Catholic Church in South Porcupine as well as acting as their book-keeper, completing their monthly and yearly financial statements.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville (one block east of Kerr, 905-844-2600) on Friday January 3, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Following the visitation, Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Ivan's rich and productive life will take place at Holy Trinity Croatian Catholic Church (2110 Trafalgar Road North, Oakville) at 7:30 p.m. Private interment.
In lieu of flowers, the family will graciously accept donations to Ivan's chosen charities, namely, the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Holy Trinity Croatian Parish – Caritas, Croatia or to a charity of choice. Sincerest thanks to Dr. Terrence Da Silva, Dr. Martin Benhara, the C.C.A.C. nurses and staff at Vistamere Residence, the nursing staff at OTMH (4 East) and the many friends who visited, nurtured and loved Ivan. Their care and continuous support is sincerely appreciated. Ivan will be fondly remembered for his loyalty to community, country, church and family.
